Srinagar, Dec 25: The partial blacktopping and 'indifferent' approach of the government towards dilapidated condition of the city roads have irked locals who accuse the government of taking 'aam admi' for a ride in the garb of development.
The assurances of Minister that the contractors assigned for constructing roads will be held accountable incase of unsatisfactory work proved as a mere hoax as most the roads in Srinagar still craves for government attention.
People in most city areas where blacktopping of roads was done with strict instructions by the Minister concerned to use quality material for the same alleged that the authorities left the work halfway which resulted into the dilapidation of roads in absence of final coat.
The locals alleged that the roads were last repaired some four years back however the sub-standard material used by the contractors in nexus with officials of R&B department could not last long.
They said that the people heaved a sigh of relief after the repairing of roads was again started by the PDP government however the condition is same as it was during NC Congress regime.
"Not a single road, lane or bi-lane was repaired sincerely, the contractors assigned for the job were always in hurry despite strict directions from the government to complete the work in shortest possible time," Gulam Mustafa Zargar, a Zainakote resident told 'Early Times'.
He said that the uninspiring approach of the government to look into the performance of contractors encouraged them to resort to loot of state exchequer by suing sub-standard material for constructing roads.
"Being a responsible citizen it's my responsibility to criticize the government, if it had directed the concerned to use quality material for roads then why the orders remain confined to cozy office rooms of Mantris and Babus," Shahnawaz a Kashmir University Scholar said.
He said most of the roads in Srinagar are in extremely bad conditions with government seemingly undaunted over the plight of the people.
From Old city to Uptown and outskirts no road has been properly repaired, the famous picturesque Dal Lake which houses Sheri Kashmir International Convocation Centre (SKICC) has taken a shabby look due to poor roads.
"No doubt that the government repaired roads but they are of no use as the same have developed deep ruts while black topping has vanished in thin air," claimed Shahnawaz.
