Early Times Report

Anantnag, Dec 25 : Irked over frequent power cuts particularly on the day of Eid-e-Milad Nabi (SAW), residents of Srigufwara in this southern district on Friday held protests against Power Development Department.
Agitated residents blocked Bijbehara-Langanbal road for hours together and raised high pitched slogans against the Department and government.
Sriguwafara-the native village of MLC Sofi Yousf is reeling under darkness from past a month. Other areas like Khiram, Sirhama, Mehand, Shaligam, Hitigam who are getting electricity supply from Receiving Station Khiram are too witnessing unscheduled and frequent power cuts.
"Blubs just blink," a protester told Early Times, adding frequent power cuts irk them more than anything else.
"We couldn't have held the protest today but the frequent cuts just irritate. After ten minutes we are witnessing power cuts," he added.
Protesters said that the line coming from Receiving Station often remains under fault. "Filed staff blames employees posted at Receiving Station Khiram but employees at station blame filed staff for frequent power cuts," they said.
They said that if the department can't provide electricity to them then they must stop sending the hiked bills.
PDD officers told Early Times that receiving station is overloaded which causes frequent cuts. "Problem can be resolved only if the residents will use electricity judiciously," a senior official said.
Despite repeated requests from Police, protesters refused to call off the protest resulting inconvenience to devotees visiting Khiram-Hazratbal shrine.
Meanwhile, Senior BJP Leader and member of legislative Council Sofi Yousf along with Deputy Commissioner Anantnag and other senior officers visited his native village Srigufwara and pacified the protesters with assurance that he will take up the issue with concerned department and Minister.
He termed the demands of residents genuine and said that in coming days he himself will convey a 'public Darbar' to discuss the problem with the department in presence of public for resolving it once far all.
On his assurance, protesters later called off the strike and allowed traffic to play normally.
