SRINAGAR, Jan 21: Supporters of MLA Langate and Awami Itihaad Party (AIP) President Engineer Abdul Rashid came to blows with some members of Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) while the legislator was carrying out protest demonstration in south Kashmir's Pulwama town.
Reports said that Engineer Rashid along with some of his supporters reached the office of Deputy Commissioner Pulwama and sat on a dharna outside the office against the killing of a civilian in the firing of police and security forces at Naina Batpora in the district on Wednesday. The legislator raised slogans against the action of forces and demanded a thorough probe in the incident.
During the sit-in Engineer Rashid raised slogans against the BJP and said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has maintained a silence on the killing of innocent civilians in the Kashmir valley ever since he came to power in 2014. He accused the BJP of giving a free hand to police and other security agencies and 'unleashing atrocities' on common masses in the valley.
While the sit-in was going on a group of BJP workers appeared on the scene and asked the MLA Langate not to raise slogans against BJP. The BJP workers allegedly abused Engineer Rashid and asked him to shut his 'shop'. The legislator asked the BJP workers to remain silent and allow him to continue with his protest.
For some time there was an eerie silence and the both the sides kept mum while the protest was going on. As the MLA Langate started to culminate his protest the BJP workers led by a youth leader once again objected to his remarks on BJP and Prime Minister. This time too the BJP workers hurled abuses on Engineer Rashid.
Observing that abuses are being hurled on their leader the supporters of Engineer Rashid came forward and started advancing towards the BJP workers. This was followed by a scuffle between the two sides with invectives also being exchanged. Interestingly, the police officials posted there did not intervene.
It was only after the intervention of some locals that the situation got normal and the warring groups were separated. Some of the reports suggested that MLA Langate also intervened and ensured that no harm is caused to his detractors.
At the same time normal life was affected in Pulwama town against the killing of youth identified as Parvez Ahmad Guroo. Reports of partial strike have also come from Anantnag, Shopian and Kulgam districts of South Kashmir. In uptown Srinagar strike was observed in connection with 26th anniversary of Gaw Kadal killings.
