Early Times Report

Kishtwar, Jan 21 : Some unidentified burglars last night set ATM of State Bank of India on fire after they failed to loot Rs 25 lakh cash. This is the 2nd attempt of burglary inside the said ATM. The first took place on February 4, 2014.
As per the details available with Early Times, some unidentified burglers broke into the SBI ATM at Chinar Gali in the heart of Kishtwar town, merely 100 mt away from the security picket at Gudhali Chowk, and attempted to loot the cash by breaking its two tier security rings, but fail to decamped with Rs 25 lakh.
Police said after failure in their attempt, the burglars put the shop in which ATM machine was installed on fire by using petrol and added that though the shop was badly damaged, the cash was safe. Police said the burglars also damaged the CCTV camera installed inside the ATM chamber to hide their identity by destroying the CCTV footage.
Police has also recovered a petrol can containing around half a litre of left out petrol used by the burglars in setting the ATM chamber on fire.
After receiving the information, SHO of Kishtwar, Mohammad Afzal Wani rushed to the spot and inspected the scene of crime. Senior police officers also reached the spot after some time and collected evidence.
On the basis of the complaint lodged by SBI officer Mudassir Ahmed Ganie, police registered FIR under sections 457, 380, 511 and 436 of RPC at police station, Kishtwar, and entrusted the inquiry to SI Anil Kotwal.
It is pertinent to mention here that today's attempt is the 6th attempt to loot SBI ATMs in the last few years.
An attempt was also made by the burglars to loot the J&K Bank ATM at old Bus Stand, Kishtwar, last year after the J&K Bank, Kishtwar, robbery wherein the burglars had managed to loot Rs 1.0648 cr from the main branch of Kishtwar bank in 2009.
Out of stolen money, only around Rs 55 lakh were recovered by police while the whereabouts of remaining cash of over Rs 50 lakh were yet to be known even after 7 years.
The case is being investigated by Crime Branch, Jammu.
Around half a dozen people were arrested by police who are presently on bail.
