Srinagar, Jan 23: Ahead of January 26, police have launched a massive crackdown against stone pelters and tightened security to ensure peaceful Republic Day functions in Kashmir valley. Police have launched a major crackdown against stone pelters in view of reports that attempts may be made to create disturbance on Republic Day. Perturbed by recent incidents of stone pelting, police sources told Early Times that scores of stone pelters have been arrested in view of the January 26 to ensure peaceful Republic Day celebrations. "In the last few days, the J&K police have detained scores of youth from Central, South and North Kashmir," a senior police official said. He said this has been done as a precautionary measure and these stone pelters may be released after January 26. "We don't want any untoward incident happen on theJanuary 26. Recently after a militant was killed in Pulwama, scores of youth took onto the streets which created law and order problem in the district following which a youth got killed," he said. The official said there were apprehensions that some miscreants may try to disrupt the law and order on eve of January 26. "We are vigilant and have launched crackdown against those miscreants," the police official said. He said some miscreants have become habitual of stone-pelting and police is going to take action against those stone-pelters. Police have also sounded alert in the Valley following the recent encounters between militants and security forces in South Kashmir and after the murder of a taxi-driver by unidentified men in HP, who escaped with the taxi. "Our patrolling is on, ambushes are in place and CCTV surveillance has been enhanced," a top police official said. On Saturday afternoon, security was alerted in Srinagar after an input that a suspected vehicle entered Srinagar from south Kashmir. A high alert was sounded and security men stepped up checking of vehicles across Srinagar, where security agencies have already tightened the security ahead of the Republic Day function. To avert any untoward incident, the J&K Police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) have stepped up round-the-clock patrolling in the city to keep an eye on the situation. In Kashmir, the main R-Day celebrations will be held at the Bakshi Stadium in Srinagar and the Police and CRPF have already started sanitising the areas around the stadium. A police officer associated with the security around the Bakshi stadium said they had carried out many search operations around the stadium. "Various nakas have been placed on the roads leading to the stadium to ensure a peaceful Republic Day," said the officer. He said a thick three-tier security cover would be thrown around the stadium in the coming days. J&K Director General of Police K Rajendra Kumar had already asked for the security review of venues for the R-Day functions across the region. |
