Suspense continues over Government formation | | | Jehangir Rashid ET Report SRINAGAR, Jan 23: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) partners in the former coalition Government in the State are going slowly with regard to the Government formation and as such people are skeptical over the future. Although legislators and other important functionaries of PDP authorized the party President Mehbooba Mufti to take the final call with regard to coalition with BJP, the ice is yet to broken and as such the stalemate continues in Jammu & Kashmir with respect to the Government formation. Mehbooba has not displayed her cards as yet and as such she has kept the people guessing. The BJP leaders are waiting for a statement from the PDP President so that they could 'sell' the same and make the announcement that PDP-BJP is going to form the next Government in the State. Mehbooba along with other senior leaders of the PDP want some assurance from the people at helm in New Delhi on certain issues that find a mention in Agenda of Alliance charted between the two parties before Late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed took over the Chief Minister of the State on March 1, 2015. Sources told Early Times that since not much progress has taken place on some issues mentioned in the Agenda of Alliance over the past 10 months or so the PDP wants to play it safe this time around. Ideally, they would not take any decision in haste in this regard and would wait for the situation to emerge before they reach to any conclusion vis-a-vis formation of Government in the State. "PDP leaders fully know that the power projects being owned by National Hydro-electric Power Corporation (NHPC) cannot be handed over to the State in a jiffy since financial implications are attached to it. However, they want a time frame or a deadline from the Central Government in this regard so that the necessary instructions are passed to the NHPC higher ups in this regard," said sources. Sources said that PDP leadership also wants the Central Government to be liberal in allocating funds for the people who suffered losses due to the devastating deluge of September 2014 flood. The party wants the Government of India to release more money so that the people hit by flood are satisfied to some extent. "It is not easy for PDP to renew its alliance with BJP since lot of mistrust has grown between the two parties over issues of tricky nature. Given this situation it may take some more time for the two parties to iron out their differences and following which the next Government in the State would come up," said sources. Sources said that PDP leaders especially its President want assurance from no less than Prime Minister Narendra Modi with respect to some issues contained in the Agenda of Alliance. There are also chances that PDP would want abolition of the position of deputy Chief Minister in case they align with BJP for Government formation in the State. |
