Separatists issue fresh diktat; ask people to stay away from Jan 26 functions | 'Declare separatists traitors, put them behind bars' | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Jan 23: With just two days left for Republic Day celebrations, separatists in Kashmir have issued a diktat to Government officials and students asking them to stay away from the official functions. The Hurriyat hawk, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, has described Republic Day as "Black Day" and has called for a complete shutdown in Kashmir. It's not for the first time that separatists have asked people and students to stay away from official functions. They issue such diktats every year. During the past few years the impact of such diktats has decreased as people don't pay any heed to such orders anymore. Sources told Early Times students of many schools across the Valley would participate in the official functions on the occasion of Republic Day, and besides officials locals also are expected to witness the January 26 celebrations. "For officials it's mandatory to attend the Republic Day functions and an official order in this regard has already been issued," said a source. He said school children are doing hectic rehearsals to ensure that they put up a good show on the occasion of the Republic Day. "Schools which are participating in the Republic Day functions have already forwarded the list of students to the concerned authorities," the source added. A Kashmir watcher said, "Times have changed and people don't follow the diktats of separatists anymore. People have realized that separatists give such calls to appease their bosses sitting across the Line of Control (LoC) and it has got nothing to do with the welfare of the masses." He said during the past few years people in large numbers have come forward and participated in Republic Day and Independence Day functions. "During the past few years Army has organized many tours for common Kashmiris. Army has taken people from different areas of Kashmir to other States and has shown them the real India. These tours have definitely helped people to understand Indian democracy better and they have realized that their future lies with India," he added. A retired army official said, "People who call for strike and ask officials and students to stay away from the Republic Day celebrations should be booked and arrested. How can we allow anyone to call our Republic Day or Independence Day as black day. It's unfortunate that Government allows such elements to vitiate peace and indulge in anti-India propaganda. Separatists should be declared as traitors and put behind bars." |
