Amid stalemate, no word from GoI over return of power projects yet | | | Peerzada Ummer
Early Times Report
Srinagar, Jan 23 : The return of the two power projects from the NHPC to the state is acting as a major reason behind the present stalemate in the government formation with PDP leadership and the union government deliberating over the outcome of such a process, if initiated in near future. Sources within the PDP divulged that the party has informed the union government that it would not even move an inch from its demand and that if the BJP wants to have the coalition government in the state with the PDP; it has to atleast take the initiative of returning the power projects to the state government. A senior PDP leader said the party in its recent meetings has resolved that it would 'continuously and rigorously' pursue the return of the power projects from the NHPC and that without such an action, the party finds no reason to enter into the bonhomie with the BJP once again. ' 'Lot has been said and done in the past. We would not prefer to dig old graves. If the new beginning has to be made, it has to be based on mutual trust and understanding. One way traffic would not yield results,'' said the party leader. Sources said that if the PDP succeeds in returning the power projects from the hydropower giant to the state, it would not only strengthen the PDP in valley but would also enable BJP to gain ground in the state. Reports informed that handing over atleast the two NHPC-run and owned power projects to the government headed by Mehbooba Mufti will allow her to gain instant popularity in an energy-starved state. A senior PDP leader was earlier quoted by the reports as saying that what makes Mehbooba hopeful about realising it is that it also gives the BJP an opportunity to appear benevolent to the Kashmir valley in an "instantly tangible manner. Pertinently, erratic electricity outages in Jammu and Kashmir have made the things worse with the successive regimes failing to mitigate peoples' sufferings. Interestingly, Mufti Sayeed, during his first tenure as chief minister between 2002 and 2005, had managed to rationalise power distribution. This was one of the major factors for his popularity at that time. Meanwhile, when contacted , a PDP functionary says the party hasn't received any intimation from the union government over whether it intends to facilitate the return of Uri-I and Salal to Jammu and Kashmir government from the NHPC. He says that party would decide about the course of action only after receiving any information about the progress on its demands from the union government. The leader, who is privy to the latest developments taking place within, revealed that no decision over the government formation will be taken in haste this time and that the party chief is contemplating each and every aspect of the decision that she would make in the near future. Meanwhile, with the deadlock continuing over the government formation, it is yet to be seen how things would go in near future. By demanding the return of the power projects, the PDP has thrown the ball in BJP's court. |
