Early Times Report

Rajouri, Feb 27: Students of Post-Graduation (PG) College supported by the inhabitants of the area held a protest demonstration against the dilapidated condition of the College Road and blocked the road for more than 2 hours in front of the college.
The road from Rajouri town to Darhal via Post Graduate (PG) Degree College is in dilapidated condition for the last few years due to poor quality work executed by the contractor in order to make quick bucks in nexus with the officials of Prime Minister Grameen Sarak Yojna (PMGSY).
Besides PG College, district hospital, District Institute of Education and Training (DIET) complex, 3-4 higher secondary/high schools and many other district level government offices are situated on this road.
Inhabitants of the area and PG college students said that the road was repaired and black topped in the year 2014 by a contractor under PMGSY project.
"But after few months of black topping the entire road was damaged due to torrential rains and inadequate drainage system. In 2015 after several protests by the students district administration directed the contractor to repair the road but only after patch work contractor disappeared from the scene" said Sahil a student leader.
Ashok Kumar inhabitant of Kheora area said immediately after patch work the road again became headache for the commuter as well as for the vehicle owners.
Even the passenger vehicle owners reduced the frequency of the vehicle to save them from damage on this pothole filled and bumpy road and the worst sufferers were college/school students and inhabitants of the area.
Mumtaz Ali, ADC along with police party rushed to the spot and talked to the students who had closed the road by burning tyres.
"Besides repair and black topping of the road the students were also demanding immediate action against those private passenger vehicle owners/ drivers who have been plying vulgar songs with high volume while female students traveling in the vehicles" ADC said.
Sadeeq Ahmed Wani, Executive Engineer PWD(R&B) when contacted said that initially the road was under PMGSY and in the month of October it was handed over to the PWD department.
"The e-tenders were already issued but due to poor response from the contractors the work couldn't be allotted. Soon the department will issue fresh e-tenders and it was hoped that by the end of March the repair as well as black topping work on this road will be started' said Executive Engineer.
