‘Chidambaram should apologize for questioning Guru’s execution’ | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 27: The former Union Finance Minister and senior Congress leader P Chidambaram raising questions over Afzal Guru's hanging three years after his execution has created a furore in the entire country. Experts are of the opinion that Chidambaram raising the Afzal Guru issue is just a political gimmick aimed at remaining in limelight and diverting the attention from the real issues. "Chidambaram by questioning the execution of Afzal Guru has hurt the sentiments of the families of the martyrs, who died while fighting the terrorists who tried storming the Parliament," said an analyst. He said, "Someone needs to remind Chidambaram that when Afzal Guru was hanged Congress was at the helm of the affairs. The hanging was carried out by the Congress to somehow stop the march of BJP towards the power as Narendra Modi wave had almost gripped India when Afzal was hanged." "Despite Congress hanging Afzal Guru it couldn't prevent BJP from coming into power," the analyst added. A politician said, "The former Union Minister has played Afzal card at this juncture to add to the confusion as the BJP led NDA Government has been surrounded by various controversies and is struggling hard to resolve the different issues which have snowballed into major controversies." He said that Chidambaram cannot change the history as then Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde after Afzal hanging went on record to take credit for Afzal's hanging and claimed that Congress is the only nationalist party. "We strongly believe that P Chidambaram should apologize for his remarks and close this chapter as his assertion has provided a chance to anti-national elements to defame India," the politician added. An analyst said, "When Congress was in power it messed up many issues and allowed anti-national elements to call the shots. Since the day BJP led Government has taken the charge it has tightened the noose over anti-national elements and is not allowing them to call the shots. Congress is worried about its future as it feels that BJP has choked the space for Congress." He said, "Chidambaram by questioning Afzal Guru's execution has supported Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi who appeared in JNU to support the anti-national elements in the campus." The analyst said, "Congress has lost the plot and party is trying to divert the attention from real issues. Congress leaders know it very well that noose has been tightened against them and they would be asked to give the account of their misdeeds." He said, "Chidbaram and other Congress leaders cannot hide behind Afzal Guru and other excuses." |
