Coalition only made promises in 10 months, Guv delivered in few days | | | Muhammad Mukaram
Early Times Report
Srinagar, Feb 27: Showing how to govern in the true sense of the word, Governor N N Vohra soon after taking the reins of the state initiated the process of implementing all decisions about which the previous regime had only made promises to the people. The PDP-BJP coalition Government ruled for 10 months in Jammu and Kashmir amid tall promises on a volley of issues confronting the people but couldn't make any headway especially on the crucial issues like dredging of river Jhelum and providing financial assistance to the flood-hit victims. Governor Vohra however not only promised but delievered on the ground. Governor's first shot was to ensure proper attendance in the Government offices especially in the civil Secretariat on every day that too through bio-metric attendance cards. He didn't stop there and also ordered for the implementation of National Food Security Act (NFSA) despite the fact that majority of Srinagar people were against the Act as it curtails ration to the families. "We will resist Governor's decision on food law," a group of protestors in Srinagar said. There is no let-up in the protests against the implementation of the Food Security Act in the Valley for the sixth consecutive day as residents in various parts of the city came on roads and demanded the that the Act should not be implemented in the state. According to Government orders, the Act was to be implemented in J&K from February 1, 2016. "We won't let the Act get implemented in the Valley as it will deny us basic rights. We cannot afford ration from open market at higher rates. Rice is the staple food here and just 5 kg for one person per month is not enough," said Rehti Begum, a protester. The Government has maintained that 22.73 lakh families, comprising 119.13 lakh souls, were to be covered under the National Food Security Act in the state and the Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution Department with the help of the District Development Commissioners concerned was in the process of creating a comprehensive database in this regard. Governor also took a decision to go for personal monitoring of Jehlum dredging. Accompanied by the advisors, he directed the PHE and Irrigation department that he was not satisfied with the slow pace of dredging and that it should be completed on fast track basis. Earlier, PDP-BJP Government sat on the prestigious project despite the fact September 2014 deluge took a heavy toll on the State leaving behind huge trial of death and destruction. Vohra just in his short ongoing stint chaired a crucial meet on flood relief assistance to victims including traders in Kashmir, something promised by the PDP in its election campaign across Kashmir. A close aide to Governor Vohra said that he is committed to the welfare of people during his short stay. "He doesn't want to leave any stone unturned. He is committed to fulfill the promises made to the people by the previous regime," he said. A senior PDP leader said that they are monitoring each and every step Governor is taking and feel helpless at this occasion that they don't want to enter into any compromise. |
