Fire victims of Uri left to fend for themselves | | | S Tahir-ul Haq Early Times Report BARAMULLA, Feb 27: After passing of four days, district administration has turned a blind eye towards the fire victims who suffered huge losses following fire in at least 100 shops and go-downs in Uri town of this North Kashmir district. The fire occurred during the intervening night of February 23 and 24. Sources said that hundreds assembled today in the main market of Uri town to show their solidarity with the fire victims whose shops and go-downs were gutted in fire. They said that none from district administration including Deputy Commissioner, Additional Deputy Commissioner nor Assistant Commissioner Revenue went to meet with the fire victims of Uri. "Local administration of Uri including SDM, police and army helped us lot, round the clock they met with traders and assured them all possible help at the earliest," said sources. The affected people said that they were expecting that Deputy Commissioner Baramulla Yasha Mudgal will make a visit here, but she disappointed us. They said that at least 80 shops and other business establishments were gutted in the devastating fire. "From time to time we appealed the government that to cater growing population in our border areas, at least Uri tehsil needs three to four fire tenders as people are living on hilly areas and such incidents can occur any time," said locals. Meanwhile, today a delegation of Kashmir Traders & Manufactures Federation (KTMF) including General Secretary Traders Federation Baramulla Tariq Mugloo also met with the fire victims of Uri. President KTMF Mohammad Yaseen Khan told early times that it is very unfortunate that Deputy Commissioner Baramulla has not yet visited the fire affected people. He appealed the Governor N N Vohra to look into the matter that even after passing of four days that why DC has not visited here to meet with the fire victims. "Business community pays taxes and it is all because of we people that government is functioning smoothly and then after it become their responsibility to look into our problems," said President KTMF. In the meantime, a delegation of Baramulla Working Journalists Association (BWJA) today visited Uri and met with the traders and showed solidarity with the fire victims. The fire victims told media that even after passing of four days, no official from district administration has visited the area to take stock of the position. |
