Early Times Report
Srinagar, Mar 19: Government formation in Jammu and Kashmir hitting a roadblock has send the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leaders into tizzy and most of them have started believing that PDP-BJP bonhomie has ended.
Sources told Early Times the PDP president Mehbooba Mufti Saturday returned from New Delhi and chose not to speak to anyone leaving everyone guessing about her future course of action.
Mehbooba from Srinagar Airport drove straight to her Fairview residence at Gupkar here and did not meet anyone.
The party insiders maintained that she is going to call the party meeting in a couple of days before she would make her party's stand regarding government formation public.
Pertinently, Mehbooba had a half an hour meeting with BJP President Amit Shah at New Delhi on Thursday which according to reports did not help both the parties to break the impasse.
Mehbooba, according to the sources, was scheduled to meet the Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi but after the BJP General Secretary Ram Madhav declared that government in Jammu and Kashmir cannot be formed on pre-conditions she decided to return thus triggering the speculations that government formation talks have been called off and the possibilities of PDP and BJP joining hands are remote.
It's in place to mention here that after BJP refused to accept any new demand of PDP the party had softened its stand saying it has not put any pre-conditions for the government formation in the state.
Sources said the PDP MLAs had pressurized their President Mehbooba Mufti to climb down from her stand and form the government with BJP but the BJP high command hardening its stand has changed the entire scenario.
The former ministers who were hoping to get the power back have been left high and dry and they are running short of ideas about how to deal with the situation.
The BJP leaders from Jammu and Kashmir have reportedly expressed dismay over the decision of the party high command to say no to government formation in the state. "All has not been lost. We are in touch with the party high command. If PDP is really serious to form the government it should take the first step by electing the legislature party leader and stake the claim to form the government. The Issues raised by the PDP could be taken up with the centre once the government is formed," said a BJP insider.
Sources said that BJP leaders from Jammu and Kashmir who just got a chance to enjoy power for ten months have still not given hope and they are trying to persuade the PDP leaders on their own level to go ahead. "BJP leaders believe that if PDP takes the first step BJP high command would respond," said a source.
He said, "BJP leaders have got it conveyed to PDP leaders that party is committed to implement the Agenda of Alliance and it can be done when PDP takes a few steps."
BJP insiders revealed that a few leaders from JK have made it to clear to the party high command that it would be difficult for them to repeat the 2014 performance if the snap polls are held.
A PDP insider said that when negotiations were on BJP leadership had assured Mehbooba that it would fulfill some of her demands. "It's strange that BJP leaders have taken a U-turn suddenly and have put the question mark on the fate of the government formation in JK," he added.
The PDP, pertinently, on Friday, tweeted:"Agenda Of Alliance sought modalities for transfer of Dulhasti & Uri power projects to J&K as suggested by Rangarajan Committee Report. The return of power projects & a share in the profits of NHPC emanating from J&K waters.
Pertinently, BJP had won 25 out of 37 seats in Jammu region in 2014 assembly polls and went on to join hands with PDP to form the government which had won 28 seats in the last elections.
