Despite NC warming up to it, BJP drifts away | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Mar 22: As the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are inching closer to form the government in Jammu and Kashmir, the National Conference Working President and former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah made a last ditch attempt on Monday to create confusion by stating that PDP is heading towards a split. Omar called on Governor NN Vohra yesterday and raised the issue of "horse trading" and later told reporters that BJP is trying to split the PDP into two. "JK has already paid a very heavy price for this sort of splitting and the same is not in the interest of trouble torn state. If 1984 had not happened J&K would not have been the victim of militancy. So I will be the last person to favour government formation in the state on the basis of engineering a split," he said. "We are all aware there is an effort to form a government in the state independent of Mehbooba Mufti and if she will not agree to the terms and conditions set by the BJP to form the government in the state her party would split and it would weaken her position," Omar had claimed. Reacting to Omar's "PDP would split" theory, a senior PDP leader said, "The NC president and his party left no stone unturned during the past two months to ensure that government is not formed in the state and kept on indulging in propaganda. He is finding it hard to believe that PDP-BJP are ready to join hands again and government formation is on cards." An analyst said, "Till yesterday NC leaders were hoping that BJP would not accept the conditions put forward by the PDP Chief Mehbooba Mufti and both the parties would end up saying goodbye to each other. There were reports that NC was warming up to BJP and a few of its leaders had even started dreaming about them forming the government in the state. Their dreams stand shattered as they would have to wait for five more years now to think about the government and the Chief Minister's office." He said, "PDP would split was the last arrow in NC's quiver and they played the last shot with utmost caution but it did not work as by then BJP central leaders had provided enough hints about they going with Mehbooba." The analyst said, "If one studies the tweets of Omar Abdullah during the past two months he can easily understand that former Chief Minister had played safe by attacking PDP only. He didn't launch any attack on BJP with the hope that party may look towards NC sooner or later to form the government in JK." A Kashmir watcher said, "Mehbooba during the past two and a half months proved that she is a seasoned politician as she remained calm and did not react to the provocations. Omar and his party men tried their best to provoke her but she remained unmoved and didn't react." |
