SMC spends lakhs on ads, forgets garbage collection | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Mar 23: After courting controversy over allotment of Waste to Energy project, the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has now been caught in another messy state of affairs. From last more than a month the corporation has spent lakhs of tax payers money on advertisements on local electronic and print media , but took no steps to undertake the door to door collection of garbage. Documents available with Early Times reveal that during January and February months the SMC spent a huge amount on so called awareness campaign in local print and electronic media. The documents reveal that advertisements have been given to many unimportant news papers as well whose circulation is not more than 500 prints on daily basis. "I am not against awareness campaign through print and electronic media , but first SMC must give priority to door to door collection of garbage and its segregation. Not a single penny is being spent on these types of activities. I am shocked to see that good amount of money has been paid to some newspapers whose circulation does not cross more than 500 prints daily and people hardly have heard names of such newspapers in valley" said Dr Mushtaq Khan RTI Activist who obtained the information from SMC authorities through Right to Information Act (RTI). "Segregation of biodegradable and non bio degradable items is the best option before municipal authorities to manage the solid waste and all the environmental experts lay emphasis on it . The SMC is hardly interested in undertaking this type of work and is busy in inviting big companies to Srinagar so that its officials make money. SMC and other municipal authorities need to segregate bio-degradable and non biodegradable waste material at source and door to door collection is the only viable option says Dr Fayaz Ahmad who teaches Environmental Science in Higher Education Department. SMC has been previously caught in another similar controversy wherein the valley's top most missionary school located in Srinagar's posh Rajbagh area was found to be involved in an holy nexus and corruption in league with the employees of Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) from the last many years. The presentation convent school according to official documents from SMC has not at all paid sanitation fees towards the SMC, but on the other hand SMC lifts huge amount of garbage from Presentation Convent School on daily basis. An RTI query in this case had revealed that SMC officials were not charging any monthly sanitation fees from the Presentation Convent School management for lifting the huge garbage which gets accumulated in the school premises. This illegal activity had continued for many years. "The present SMC Commissioner is a tainted officer , he has illegally grabbed 90 kanals of Government (shamilaat) land in his ancestral village in Kulgam , while he was posted as ACR / Settlement officer Kulgam . We fail to understand how these corrupt officers manage to get prime posting ? " said Naseer Ahmad (name changed) an employee of SMC. |
