'Money game' on to sabotage Government formation | Intel agencies put social media under scanner | | Hyder Ali Early Times Report srinagar, Mar 23: At a time when the Peoples Democratic Party and the Bharatiya Janta Party are inching towards Government formation, attempts are being made to sabotage the development, the Home Ministry has learnt. Though till now, only militancy was seen as the "traditional threat to such political developments", it is for the first time in the past over 25 years of turmoil that social media has emerged as the potential threat. Highly placed sources told Early Times that intelligence agencies have received inputs that some "vested interests" were shelling out "over Rs 20 crore" on social media, particularly on Facebook, Twitter and Watsapp to spread a word of hate with sole motive of sabotaging the Government formation. The police is close to crack the case and that a formal FIR was likely to be registered against the "mastermind soon". The sources said the "money game" which had been active since February when the two parties resumed talks, has risen over 500 times in the past two days since PDP president Mehbooba Mufti held talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the national capital. While the intelligence agencies have tracked down over 2000 such accounts, their details are being listed in a specialized database to ascertain the motives. "We are trying to verify the money connection, which seems to be the only possible motive behind the hate content. Otherwise the accounts which would be normal have suddenly started sharing hate content pertaining to the Government formation," the official said, adding that Raj Bhawan has been briefed about the "alarming situation on the social media." A police official pleading anonymity told Early Times that the "vested interests" have hired some "professional trollers" to fuel the hatred and that they are being paid around Rs 10,000 per day to keep the pot of hatred boiling. Apart from political reasons, it's being ascertained whether the sabotage is being made to derail the upcoming tourist season. "Through better diplomatic relations with Pakistan he (Modi) has already invested to have peace in Jammu and Kashmir, so in the given conditions, those who don't want tourism to flourish in Kashmir could be part of the game plan," said an official, adding that the location of the social media account handlers was being ascertained. |
