Now, internal bickering hits Congress | | | Hyder Ali Early Times Report srinagar, Mar 23: Amid political uncertainty since the imposition of Governor's rule in Jammu and Kashmir on January 8, resentment is brewing within the Congress over the working of the State Pradesh Congress President GA Mir even as sabotage from "external hands" is not being ruled out. Sources told Early Times that resentment is brewing against the policies of the Pradesh Congress President, especially in Jammu region, which is the traditional "vote base of the party in the State." They said in the past three odd months of political uncertainty the party could have gained a lot on the ground but "because of mismanagement of political affairs, the opportunity has been missed as Congress remained missing from the ground." "Most of the senior Congress leaders in Jammu are not happy with the functioning which the new State Congress head has adapted ignoring Jammu region at the cost of Kashmir. Most of the activities he carried since last one year have been limited to Kashmir valley while as Jammu region, which is the vote bank of the party has been completely ignored," the sources said. Sources revealed that ever since GA Mir was elected as the party president by the Congress high command Sonia Gandhi in 2015, popular State leaders in Jammu like Sham Lal Sharma and others have been marginalized. "Even the Congress high command last year suspended three senior leaders - Abdul Gani Vakil, Gulchain Singh Charak and Prem Sagar Aziz - from the party for opposing the decision of elevation of Mir as the party president," recapped a party leader. A senior Congress leader while commenting on the latest affairs in the party said: "Neither Congress is gaining in Jammu nor in Kashmir due to the fact that Mir hasn't been able to perform." "After the suspension of Vakil, Charak and Aziz, nobody wants to annoy the high command by openly criticizing Mir. But the fact remains that senior leaders in Jammu like Sham Lal Sharma, Raman Bhalla, Madan Lal and others have been marginalized," he added. "It has been a year since Mir took over as the President but barring a few small rallies in Srinagar last year, he could do nothing substantial to galvanize the party after the debacle of 2014 Parliament and Assembly polls," he said. "If the high command doesn't take immediate steps to uplift the morale of the party cadres, Congress could see more worse whenever elections are held in the State," the leader feared. Despite repeated attempts GA Mir could not be contacted for comments. But a senior leader from his lobby said things were going on smoothly. He, however, accused the regional parties like National Conference and the Peoples Democratic Party of trying to create wedge between the Congress leadership. "Basically regional parties don't want Congress to be strong because, as of now, our party like elsewhere in the country is gaining grounds in Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh alike, so the local parties fear a threat to their existence," the Congress leader told Early Times. He recalled that it was only during the tenure of GA Mir that senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi last year rallied in Srinagar's Maisuma locality, which has otherwise been a bastion of separatist sentiment. "Rahul Ji enjoyed tea at a stall in Maisuma and spend some good time interacting with the locals… Winds of change are visible and we thus the rivals are trying to create wedge in the party," he added. |
