Panchayat polls: Will coalition Govt learn from Omar's mistakes? | | | ET Report JAMMU, Apr 11: Taking a cue from British politics to float with opportunism than to drown to the bottom with your principles round your neck, the State Government has again binned its 'principles'. On April 8, a media report said the Government is "about to delay municipal and panchayat elections." It was against this delay that the PDP and the BJP would protest against during Omar Abdullah's Government. Governor Vohra had made all the arrangements to hold both municipal and panchayat elections on time, the report said. Since both the PDP and the BJP decided to form the coalition again, sources said that there will be possible delay to hold these elections. The report quoted a source saying, "The Government will have to get the budget passed before June 30 as Governor has taken the Vote-on-Account for three months. Further, the Government has to utilize existing strength of paramilitary forces and Jammu and Kashmir Police from the middle of June for annual Amarnath pilgrimage starting July 2 this year." The main reason for deferring the municipal and panchayat has been, according to sources, the budget session and Amarnath yatra. But when Omar Abdullah Government decided to defer these polls during his tenure citing same reasons, it was the PDP and the BJP who would shout to the highest pitch of their voice against delay. It is noteworthy that it was during NC-Congress regime that the municipal elections were held after a gap of 37 years in April-May 2011. And the municipal elections were last held in the State in January-February 2005 during Ghulam Nabi Azad's tenure after a gap of 26 years. The municipalities had ceased to exist in March 2010 and no real effort was made to reinitiate the process since then. Political commentators see no hope that the present Government, which is mirred in opportunism, will revive these two polling systems. "Only time will tell us how much low this coalition will stoop to degrade the governance system," they said. The analysts also say that seeing the developmental works during the Governor’s rule, people prefer that form of Government to an elected one. |
