Non-local students continue to leave campus | NIT row | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Apr 11: Despite the claims of some of the Ministers of the State Cabinet that situation is 'normal' at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) campus the outstation students continued to leave the campus today as well. Sources told Early Times that since early morning scores of outstation candidates belonging to the different States of the country left the campus for their respective homes. The students had already packed their bags and they went on the 'forced' vacation while leaving the campus in groups. Although, the State Government and the institute authorities carried out many rounds of dialogue with the outstation students there was no success in ending the impasse that has been going on there for the last 11 days. The trouble broke out at the NIT campus after Indian cricket team's defeat to West Indies in the semi-finals of T-20 world cup cricket. "The outstation candidates took strong exception to the holding of minor examinations from today and they wanted deferment of the same. This was one of the demands put forward by them and after observing that this demand of theirs has not been met a batch of outstation students left for their homes today as well," said sources. The sources said that the outstation students told the institute authorities that since the minor examination are not that significant they can be held later on once the situation is normal at the campus. However, the institute authorities rejected the demand and went on with the holding of examinations as scheduled from today. "The State Government and the institute authorities over the past few days rejected some of the demands of the agitating students. Following this many of the outstation students started leaving the campus from Saturday. In the coming days it is presumed that the remaining outstation students would leave the campus with only local students remaining there to receive education," said sources. Sources said that the outstation candidates are disappointed and dejected that their demands such as shifting of NIT campus to anywhere outside Kashmir, action against police personnel who carried out action against them and deferment of minor examinations have not been met by the State Government and institute authorities. These students believe that the State Government and institute authorities would fulfill none of their demands and they would be asked to receive education in the same manner as it used to be before the unfolding of recent events. It would be in place to mention here that ruckus broke out at the campus in the evening on Tuesday last when police personnel beat up many non-local students while they were carrying out a protest demonstration. Some of the protesting students alleged that cops entered their hostel as well and beat them up without any rhyme or reason. They alleged that the cops acted in a 'brutal' manner and beat the students as if they were criminals. Before this the outstation candidates clashed with the local students following India's defeat to West Indies in the semi-final of T-20 world cup cricket on March 31. While the local students celebrated over India's loss the outstation students objected to the same and also to the raising of anti-India slogans at the campus a day later. |
