Early Times Report
Poonch, Apr 12: Voices are echoing from several social and political platrforms within Poonch, seeking a representation in the state Council of Ministers, as this frontier district has remained unrepresented for the last 14 years during which state witnessed change of guard thrice. In 1996 two elected members were inducted in the state Cabinet by then National Conference government led by Dr. Farooq Abdullah in which Nissar Ahmed Khan from Mendhar and Mushtaq Bukhari from Surankote were made Ministers. Since then three governments have changed, but this frontier district was ignored. Recently, new PDP-BJP coalition was formed under the leadership of Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, wherein only 23 minister including Chief Minister were inducted in the Cabinet, again the district of Poonch was not given it due. In the past too, when Late Mufti Mohd Sayeed formed coalition Government, which continued only for 10 months followed by his sad demise on January 7, the People of Poonch had no representative in the state cabinet. It is pertinent to mentioned that former Chief Minister late Mufti Mohd Sayeed had a unique attachment with the people of this frontier district. "He had a dream of development for this region, he wanted to see us prospering in all fields of life," said an elderly person living near LoC in Balkote sector. The total population of Poonch district is approximately 7 lakh and for the last 14 years nobody represented them in the state Cabinet. Their problems remained unsolved where as three governments changed during this period in the state. Youth club Mendhar president Javed Iqbal urged the state government to give ministerial berth to district Poonch also so that the people of this frontier district can raise their issues before the government. |
