Pak forces violate ceasefire to push militants into J&K
4/13/2016 12:00:00 AM
Six months to seven months are a long period for Pakistani troops if they are told to lie low without pounding Indian pickets and border villages. And it is what exactly happened on Sunday-Monday when Pakistani troops once again violated ceasefire agreement in Poonch sector on the LOC.After a lull for over six months six Pakistani troops seem to have exhausted their patience and started opening fire in the Shahpur sector along the LOC (Line of Control) in Poonch district, drawing retaliation from the Indian troops. The Indian troops immediately held Pakistani forces responsible for violating the ceasefire agreement when there was no provocation from the Indian Army, that guard the LOC,And under old order the Indian troops retaliated appropriately. There was no casualty among Indian troops and nor there was any major damage to the civilian houses. Villagers said the exchange of mortar fire started at 10.45 pm on Sundayand continued till early hours of Monday morning. At least six houses were partially damaged. An Alto car parked on the road was damaged too. Mortars were fired s targeting houses on the Indian side of the LOC which forced a number of villagers to run for cover. People spent the night in the open till the firing stopped on Monday morning. Live mortar shells are still lying in the fields. Which may be later defused by the troops.
Fearing that the Pakistani troops may have pushed militants inside Jammu and Kashmir, the Special Operations Group (SOG) of the police has started search operations in the area. There has been firing on the LOC in Rajouri’s Keri sector and in Doda area of Poonch for the past two days. And the senior functionaries of the Indian Army believe that these ceasefire violations were aimed at pushing groups of militants into Jammu and Kashmir.Having already scuttled the proposed foreign secretary level talks the Pakistani troops have been looking for ways and means for escalating the level of violence which could force New Delhi to either resume talks after accepting that Kashmir continued to be a disputed territory. This is that senior separatists in Kashmir want. These separatists, especially Syed Ali Shah Geelani, wants that before talks between New Delhi and Islamabad are resumed India should announce that it accepted Kashmir being a dispute which needs a solution under the UN resolution which provides for a plebiscite.
Well Geelani and other separatists seem to ignored one important development. That pertains to some statements emanating from the UNO and from senior leaders from the US,Russia ,which says that the UN resolution on Kashmir is obsolete nd much water has flowed down the rivers in Jammu and Kashmir which requires a pragmatic settlement of all the issues that bedevil the relations between the two neighbours. What is amazing is the way Pakistan,on one hands, makes repeated pleas for resumption of talks with India but on the other hand when the opportunities draw near for reopening the channels of dialogue Islamabad manages to scuttle; these proposed talks or resort to repeated ceasefire violations on the LOC and on the IB in Jammu and Kashmir which leave no other way for India to postpone these bilateral talks. This is what happened the other day when Pakistan High commissioner to India,Abdul Basit, unilaterally announced that the proposed bilateral talks were postponed. Though the purpose of postponing talks was to block the visit of NIA to Pakistan but the damage has been done to peace in the south Asian region.Repeated ceasefire violations have increased responsibilities for the Indian troops and the BSF because they have to upgrade the border management and the anti-infiltration grid so that Pakistani forces fail to push groups of militants into Jammu and Kashmir, which is key to peace in Kashmir.
