Bovine smuggling rising due to officials-smugglers nexus | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Apr 20: Notwithstanding the Government claims, the bovine smuggling is increasing day by day from Jammu to other parts of State. Lack of clear cut policy on the part of the Government and failure of the authorities to enforce the law in letter and spirit the bovine smuggling trade is thriving with hundreds of bovine animals being taken from different parts of Jammu to Kashmir Valley daily as there is a big nexus between the officials and the smugglers. According to sources failure of government to enforce severe punishment on bovine smugglers has emboldened them to indulge in this illegal trade during broad day light. The smugglers not only during the night but in the day time carry the bovines to Valley by giving a slip to police nakas at many places on National Highway. It is hardly any day left when the bovine smuggling does not take place from different parts of Jammu to Valley under the very nose of police. Only yesterday 29 bovine animals were rescued by police at different nakas in Samba district and in some cases the smugglers managed to give police a slip leaving animals behind. Besides Samba 43 bovine animals were rescued at Nagrota yesterday also. This shows that when on a single day over 70 bovines were rescued in two different districts of the Jammu region many more could have reached Valley through traditional smuggling routes. Sources said the trade picked up after the opening of Mughal road to Kashmir and large number of vehicles smuggling the bovines use this road for carrying them to evade the constant checking which they are subjected at Jammu-Srinagar National Highway. Many times clashes have taken place between bovine smugglers and local people as well as police on this road but the Government failed to make the law stringent to check this menace which can also lead to law and order situation, sources added. Sources said the main cause of increasing bovine smuggling is officials-smugglers nexus and untill same is not broken the smuggling of animals will not decrease. Sources said besides the NH and Mughal road the bovine smugglers use the hilly tracks via Kishtwar, Doda and Reasi to smuggle animals to Valley to evade the eye of police. Not only from Jammu region but the bovines are also smuggled from neighboring states of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal as well as Rajasthan to Valley via Jammu, sources added. |
