Early Times Report
Srinagar, Apr 21: District Hospital Shopian devoid of Basic facilities and services of Specialists despite official announcement of its up-gradation seven years back compels patients of far flung areas to approach costly Private sector for treatment. Locals of the area told Early Times that main Hospital of Shopian which authorities claimed to have been upgraded from Community Health Center (CHC) to District Hospital immediately after District status was given to Shopian is still devoid of basic facilities and services of specialists. They said that only name of Hospital from CHC to District Hospital changed in seven years as hospital continues to be devoid of basic facilities including shortage of specialist doctors, qualified para-Medical Staff, ultra modern diagnostic facilities and Healthy environment for patients. One doctor in Hospital wishing anonymity of his name said that only single surgical table is available in operation theatre and keeping in view rush of patients and space available they have no option except to refer patients to Srinagar Hospitals for even minor surgeries. He said that under prevailing dearth of facilities and specialists it is impossible to even think about conducting some major surgeries related to Heart, Orthopedics and ENT in Hospital. Hospital sources said that dearth of Specialists which include Cardiologists, neurologists, urologists; ENT and orthopedics is a major reason that they refer patients to SHMS, SKIMS and B&J-Barzullah more often. They said that diagnostic lab functioning in one room of Hospital is still without CT-Scan, MRI, USG, RGU, Echo and other ultra-modern analyzers and qualified staff to conduct such examinations. Health experts said that as per patient-Doctor ratio District Hospital is supposed to have minimum twenty one specialist doctors to cater huge rush of patients and trained paramedical staff to assist Doctors in operation theaters, admit wards, and in laboratories. Locals said that many influential Doctors and unprofessional Para-medical staff recruited illegally over the years by higher ups and posted in Hospital decades back remain unchanged every time a transfer is ordered in Health sector. As the constituency remains represented by PDP candidates in state Legislative Assembly consecutively locals said that in previous NC-Congress government they approached then Minister for Health for financial assistance and completion of the construction of new building many a times. However according to locals not only previous NC-congress government but PDP-BJP government in place at present also pays no heed to develop health sector of Shopian. They said that due to dearth of basic facilities and unavailability of specialists in Hospital people with sound financial background feel it better to approach private Hospitals for treatment while poor people move to other Districts for treatment. When contacted Chief Medical officer Shopian Dr Prahal Singh said that he has already sent a proposal of requirements in District Hospital Shopian to higher ups and is hopeful to receive nod to upgrade infrastructure in the Hospital soon. |
