3 militants killed in Kupwara encounter | | | S Tahir-ul Haq

KUPWARA, Apr 21: At least three foreign militants were killed today in an encounter with security forces here in this North Kashmir district. A senior police official said that acting on specific information about the presence of 3-4 militants in Putshai area of Lolab in the district, security forces cordoned off the area and began a search operation today morning. "A joint team of Army's 28 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) police and Special Operation Group (SOG) cordoned off the area in the wee hours today morning, and engaged the militants in fire," the official told Early Times. The official said that three militants were killed in the encounter and four hand grenades, a GPS device, magazines and one 9 mm pistol were recovered from their possession. The search operation was intensified to sensitize the area so that the hiding militants couldn't escape from the encounter site, as there could be a possibility that one militant may have taken shelter in the nearby forests. Meanwhile sources said that the encounter started after morning prayers when army came in contact with suspected militants in Potushai forests in Lolab area. They said that the slain militants are believed to be a part of Lashkar-e Toiba (LeT) group and were handed over to the local Auqaf Committee for last rites. Sources further said that, search operation was going on in the near forests when last reports came in. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kupwara Aijaz Ahmad said that the army's 28 RR and SOG cordoned off GujarpatiPotushai forest area today morning after inputs about the presence of militants. "2-3 militants hiding in the woods opened fire upon the forces after being challenged by the joint team of security forces triggering a gunfight," said the SSP, adding that apparently the killed militants belonged to LeT militant outfit and are foreigners. The SSP further said that the encounter has been called off, soon after neutralizing the three militants and investigation has been taken up that from whom they were in contact and what was their future plan. He said that huge arms and ammunitions were recovered from the site of encounter. These include three AK 47 Rifles, three UBGL, 382 AK- 47 Rounds, 10 AK 47 Magazines, three pouches, three bags and other war like store. |
