Early Times Report
Jammu, May 16: Medical College and its Associated Hospitals Jammu started way back in 1982 has suffered ill treatment at the hands of government more often than not with no time bound regular measures for upkeep of various services being rendered to the public. Govt Medical College and its Associated Hospitals primarily came in existence in the year 1972 and begun its functioning from a couple of barracks still existing behind the present medical college building with all the line departments functioned from SMGS Shalimar, told an old retired employee of GMC, saying that the standard of services continued to vary and decay from time to time and gradually tracked the path of deterioration with the change of guard in MCJ after Dr. Naseeb Singh Pathania who was the founder Principal of Medical College and left behind legacy of good administration in terms of discipline, standard of class services to the people, upkeep of associated hospitals despite paucity of sources, staff, advanced medical technology with patients and their attendants visiting medical college hospitals always optimistic to get rid of their ailments going back home with happiness and new hope of life, further told, adding that the founder Principal himself was professionally and administratively a very sound doctor who believed in the concept of less talk and more work for society resisting and allowing no political interference in the working of hospitals. People of various walks of life while talking to Early Times correspondent dubbing the sick and deteriorating conditions of MCJ hospitals as a big setback to numerous patients thronging here for medical treatment who feel now more or less pessimistic to survive while visiting the hospital which slowly gained the reputation of public as "No More", if entered MC hospital Jammu for medical treatment, they rued, adding that poor administration and unnecessary political interference is contributing towards such a sorry state affairs prevalent in hospital and that is why the people affording to spend money prefer to go outside Jammu for best possible medical treatment with poor and indigent patient grappling for medical treatment here with not much hope to survive banking upon the mercy of Almighty. The sources told that for any successful functioning of hospitals associated with medical college depends upon the standard of diagnostic facilities being provided to patients with the Pathology Department (Laboratory) of the college, which is handling the diagnostic work of not only of the hospitals here but also overloaded to carry out tests pouring in from various hospitals spread over each nook and corner of Jammu province, is suffering from acute paucity of staff, proper maintenance of laboratories, shabby condition of the department and other logistic support resulting into poor quality of outcome of tests coupled with avoidable delay which needs special attention. They further informed that out of two lifts in administrative block of college, only one lift is in working condition which is catering to the needs of doctors, para- medical staff, attendants and medical college students , improvement of service delivery system, inadequate parking space, tuning up the security system to regulate overcrowding and entry in wards, lack of regular maintenance of hospital building are some of the other problematic area which needs to be taken care of by the concerned authority to frame a time bound strategy to address these issues with constant monitoring of all the different disciplines of hospital providing multifarious services like out patients department (OPD), various other diagnostic facilities, inpatient care, emergency cases etc. Another retired employee of Medical College Jammu suggestively told that in the wake of huge rush of patients and their attendants daily visiting hospital with majority who are not well read hailing from rural and far flung areas of Jammu, the hospital administration has at its disposal paraphernalia of staff and should devise a mechanism to put in place a group of employees to work as helping hands and guides to the patients about various facilities and locations whosoever needs help so that he feels comfortable and at home for getting himself treated with much ease ,further said, adding that such an arrangement is sure to considerably minimize most of skirmishes which do take place between public and doctors due to lack of proper attendance and inhospitable conditions in the hospital which often leads to suspension of work in the hospital by doctors landing the innocent patient in a piquant situation which can otherwise be avoided in the larger interest of public. When Early Times contacted Principal Dr. Zahid Geelani on this issue, his phoe was out of reach. |
