Cong moving towards total insignificance in J&K | | | Abodh Sharma
Early Times Report
Jammu, May 16: From the position of political inevitability to insignificance, Congress is relegating to the periphery of political canvas in Jammu and Kashmir thick and fast. If the central leadership fails to address the factionalism within its state unit and thinks out of the box to play the role of an imaginative and relevant opposition, it may soon lose its traditional political space to ruling BJP forever. Despite brewing resentment against BJP which rode over Modi wave to power in the last Assembly elections, the Congress failed to make political purchases on this dissent. Ruling Coalition has given many an opportunities to the opposition that includes Congress in Jammu and National Conference in Kashmir, but while NC managed to make best use of those opportunities, Congress failed to make an impact. Whether it was the issue of the BJP's stand down on ideological issues, opening of AIIMS in Jammu, Development of major tourism projects in Jammu or of late, the infamous incident of the NIT Srinagar which clearly pushed the saffron party to the back foot, the Congress failed to rise to the occasion and win back the trust of people in Jammu region, which has been its traditional stronghold. Hit by bankruptcy of ideas, the state leadership has been busy defending the indefensible Congress's first family rather than concentrating on the issues of the state. The involvement of the two prominent Congress leaders who were Ministers in the previous dispensation in serious cases of corruption, encroachment of Government land, financial irregularities and others have further eroded the credibility and reputation of the party. Incidentally, these Ministers had been projecting themselves as the champions of Jammu's cause in the Kashmir dominated polity of the state, but their real faces stand exposed and it has seriously ruined the party's image. The factionalism within the party has been another factor responsible for the relegation of the party. The appointment of the incumbent state president failed to sink differences that existed between Soz and Azad factions and the party continued to be polarized bitterly between the two camps. This factionalism resulted in a decisive loss to the party in the Chenab Valley, which was once the throttlehold of the party. Observers believe that even though Congress is facing an unprecedented political slump across the country, but if it fails gauge the mood of electorate and exhibits pragmatism, it might lose forever, the position of political inevitability that it enjoyed throughout the democratic history of the state and lost to BJP in the last elections.
