India concerned over China's provocative stance | | | India's concern over the growing provocation by China is not unfounded. Though prime minister Narender Modi has walked the extra mile to mend ties with China, Beijing continues to indulge in provocative actions. This is evident from the fact that China has increased defence capabilities and deployed more troops along the Indian border, the Pentagon has said as it warned of increasing Chinese military presence, including bases in Pakistan. The US agencies have spotted increase in capability and force posture by the Chinese military in areas close to the border with India after Pentagon submitted its annual 2016 report to the US Congress on 'Military and Security Developments Involving the People's Republic of China'. However, it may not be possible for any expert to say what is the purpose behind amassing troops by China on the borders with India. Besides amassing troops on border with India, China is all set to improve its war machinery including the nuclear weapon system. Experts are of the view that the defence capabilities that the US, Russia and India have act a motivating force for China to modernize its nuclear weapon system and missiles. The defence capabilities possessed by the US, Russia and India are among the main factors driving China to modernise its nuclear force and bolster its strategic strike capabilities. In a report to Congress detailing China's nuclear power, Pentagon has said the country was deploying new command, control and communication capabilities to its nuclear forces to improve control of multiple units in the field. China insists that the new generation of mobile missiles with warheads consisting of multiple independently targeted re-entry vehicles (MIRVs) and penetration aids are intended to ensure the viability of its strategic deterrent in the face of continued advances in the US and, to a lesser extent, Russian strategic ISR (Intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance), precision strike, and missile defence capabilities. Similarly, India's nuclear force is additional driver behind China's nuclear force modernization.Through the use of improved communication links, ICBM (intercontinental ballistic missile) units now have better access to battlefield information and uninterrupted communications connecting all command echelons, the report has said. According to Pentagon, China is working on a range of technologies to attempt to counter the US and other countries' ballistic missile defence systems, including manoeuvrable re-entry vehicles (MaRVs), MIRVs, decoys, chaff, jamming and thermal shielding. It is quite clear that China does not want to sit silent and has been displaying its war machinery and nuclear capabilities simply to generate fear among political leaders and people in India.Once India voices its concern over the modernization of nuclear weapon and missile system it may to encourage Washington and Moscow to adopt offensive postures against China.Once China is able to modernize its defence capabilities, it may motivate Islamabad to promote cordial ties with Beijing even at the cost of friendship with Washington or New Delhi. Pakistan should be jubilant over the Chinese programme on modernization of its nuclear and missile system because that may make New Delhi review its policy towards Islamabad.Once China displays its military might on the borders with India it may ultimately force New Delhi to bank on Washington and Moscow for modernising its defence capabilities and for modernizing its nuclear and missile system. In fact, China is trying to motivate Washington, Moscow and New Delhi to go in for arms race which alone could safeguard against any Chinese misadventure. With Pakistan as its friendly country, China has been able to set up its military bases and nuclear warheads in several areas of Pakistan occupied Kashmir. As such, China has to bank on Pakistan for allowing it to set up nuclear warheads in northern parts of Pakistan and PoK. This way possibilities for promoting peace between India and China seem to be bleak. It is in this context that Islamabad does not miss a chance to provoke New Delhi, but the patience shown by India is laudable. Yes, there are limitations for India, and New Delhi does not want to commit any mistake. Washington and Moscow also need to review their relations with Beijing and in the interest of peace in the south Asian region, the two countries need to stop all economic and military aid to Pakistan. |
