ANANTNAG, June 15: The flying squad, meant to oversee code of conduct violations in Anantnag that is going to polls on June 22, seized and later released Rs 58 lakh in minutes that police had recovered from a private car.
Reports said that police intercepted a Maruti Alto in Aashajipora area of Anantnag on Tuesday evening and during frisking a huge amount of cash was found in the vehicle.
Sources said that vehicle bearing registration number JK03E 1416, driven by a LIC agent was immediately taken to police post Janglatmandi.
"Driver and his co-passenger were asked to reveal identity after they claimed to be JK Bank employees but they failed," a police official confirmed.
He said that duo was detained as they were carrying Rs 58 lakh suspiciously in the town that too in the evening.
Detainees later provided the phone number of manager of JK Bank branch Ashajipra, who confirmed to police that money belongs to the branch and one among the detained was their employee who was tasked to take the money to chest branch (TP branch).
"JK Bank can never afford to carry such a big amount in a private car. We carry the amount in official vehicle and also inform local police in advance," a JK Bank official said.
In the meantime, the flying squad meant to oversee the code of conduct violations arrived in the police Post and seized Rs 58 lakh and 80 thousand. However, sources said that squad surprisingly released the amount after top JK Bank officials intervened. "Releasing the money without any investigation is against the rules and exposes the system," an official said.
Mystery continues to prevail and rumours that the money was meant to be distributed among voters continue to make rounds in Anantnag as police, election authorities and JK Bank officials continue remain tightlipped over the issue.
