Senior mantri tries to mislead press by erroneous statement | Legislators flayed him; press note says he was praised by all! | | Early Times Report srinagar, June 15: When a minister of a cabinet rank in the present coalition was cornered from all sides in assembly over the mess in his ministry, he tried to mislead press by a statement in which he claimed that the legislators praised him for taking revolutionary measures. The statement was released by minister's media manager through the state information department's bulletin on Monday. However, in the assembly he received brickbats over taking bizarre measures that according to the law makers have proved detrimental for the vital sector that the minister is heading. Not only the legislators from the opposition but from the ruling PDP as well took jibes at him over what he has done to the most vital portfolio. Participating in the demand for Grants of the Education and allied departments in the Legislative Assembly, former minister and MLA Amira Kadal, Syed Altaf Bukhari, asked the department about the provisions for maintenance of the schools given the government decision to waive off school fee of girl students. "The school fee charged from students was utilized for maintenance of the schools but the department should have alternate measures for maintenance of the schools," Bukhari said. "Teachers in private schools are less qualified and less paid but have better results than government schools where the teachers are well qualified and are paid huge salaries as well," said Congress legislator and former minister Rigzin Jora. Former Minister and PDP's Noorabad MLA, Abdul Majeed Padder also came down heavily on the Education Minister over the clubbing of schools "due to which majority of the educational institutions have been shut down". Speaking during the discussion on demand of grants in the legislative assembly, Padder pointed towards the NC and Congress MLAs, saying that it was during their rule that schools were opened in his constituency. He came down heavily on the concerned minister for clubbing the schools in his constituency. He said the government went on with the closure of schools and in his constituency only 39 schools are functional now out of 126 schools. Former Minister said most of the buildings have been left abandoned. He also took on the government for lack of staff in the schools in his constituency. Questioning the policy of the government to club the schools, Padder said this has not benefited the government. "Because of clubbing of schools in my area, the dropout rate increased manifold. The idea of consolidating schools was to decrease it," he added. former Revenue Minister and PDP's Chadoora MLA, Javaid Mustafa Mir said he doesn't believe in "hollow praise" and said there was not much that the Education Minister has done to fix the education set up in the state. He said even the schools in his constituency lack basic toilet facility and that he had to spend money from his Constituency Development Fund (CDF) to build the infrastructure. He said in one of the schools he built a separate toilet facility for girl students by spending money from the CDF. But ironically, the minister's media man, through the press note narrated a different tale. According to his press note, the legislators while praising him, said the process of rationalization initiated by the Department will go a long way in strengthening the sector in Jammu and Kashmir which was neglected by successive governments while the new transfer policy will address the menace of corruption. What shocked the newsmen was the drastic difference between what they witnessed in the assembly and what the concerned minister's press note in the evening mentioned. |
