40 injured in post-Eid clashes in Kashmir

SRINAGAR, July 6: Around 40 persons sustained injuries as groups of agitating youth clashed with police and security forces at different places in Kashmir valley after the congregational Eid prayers. Most of the injured persons were either police or security forces personnel.
Reports said that as soon as the congregational Eid prayers were over at Eidgah here groups of agitating youth came out on roads and started pelting stones on police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel posted in the area. The ding dong battle between the two sides continued for hours together and the situation was brought under control only after intense teargas shelling.
The turbulent situation in the area created problems for the people who had come to Eidgah for offering the Eid prayers from many areas of the Srinagar city. Police and CRPF personnel lobbed dozens of smoke shells on the protesters and the whole area was filled with smoke. Some of the protesters and police as well as CRPF personnel sustained injuries in the clashes.
In the Hyderpora protest demonstrations broke out as soon as the Eid prayers were completed at the Jamia Masjid Hyderpora. Agitating youth resorted to intense stone pelting on police and CRPF personnel in the Hyderpora Chowk. The youth were protesting against the recent suicide attack in the holy city of Madina in Saudi Arabia. Here too some of the protesters and police as well as CRPF personnel sustained injuries. Clashes broke out in the Anantnag town after the Eid prayers with people mostly youth resorting to stone pelting on police and CRPF. Police had to fire dozens of smoke shells in order to bring the situation under control but not before some of the protesters and security forces personnel sustained injuries. Protests also broke out in the Sopore area with some of the persons sustaining injuries in the stone pelting incidents. a Meanwhile, authorities placed separatist leaders like Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Mohammad Yasin Malik and Shabir Ahmad Shah under house arrest and barred them from offering the Eid prayers.
A police spokesman said that miscreants indulged in stone pelting at some places including Main Chowk and Batapora Sopore, Hyderpora, Iddgah Srinagar and Ashajipora, Anantnag. The spokesman said that police and security forces exercised maximum restraint while dealing with the situation. He said that 21 police and security forces personnel including two police officers and four others were injured during these incidents.
