JAMMU, June 6: Heavy rains with high velocity winds on Tuesday night lashed the J&K's winter capital and caused much damage. The strong gusts of wind uprooted trees, electric poles and hoardings, besides causing extensive damage to the standing crops. The electric wires were too snapped at several places, plunging the whole area into darkness. A huge tree got uprooted near a famous ice cream parlour close to Shakti Nagar and fell on an electric transformer of PDD, damaging it badly. As a large part of the tree truck fell on the road, the vehicular traffic was disrupted till it was removed to the roadside. The Amphalla road was too blocked after a tree fell in the middle of it. Another huge tree, which was uprooted at Bahu Plaza, too fell in the middle of the road, blocking it to vehicular traffic and the movement of the people. At least four huge trees were uprooted at Manda, blocking the morning walkers' track. Official sources said the trees were also uprooted at several other places of Jammu, but no one was wounded in these incidents. There were also unconfirned reports of the high velocity winds flattening kacha houses in some areas, the sources added.
