SASB officials 'selling Yatra permissions at Nowgam base camp' | | | Saahil Suhail
Early Times Report
Srinagar, July 6: In Srinagar, at Nowgam Base camp, Amarnath Yatries on Wednesday accused officials of Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) of selling Yatra registration cards on hefty amounts. Pilgrims also decried shortage of drinking water and adequate facilities including accommodation. A Pilgrim, who identified himself as Subash from Jammu told Early Times that mismanagement on the part of Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) and State Government especially in registration of yatris and providing basic facilities to pilgrims have exposed the hoax claims of both. Narrating the ordeal, Subash, who is himself camping at the base camp for last four days, said, "Everyone is being asked to stand up in the queue and on the basis of first come first serve rule, registration cards will be provided but in the middle of the process officials shut the window and later police use force to disperse the Yatrie like agitators," he said. Yatries accused concerned officials of selling the registration cards on hefty amounts. "We were told that they can register 600 pilgrims on each day but we noticed that officials stop the process just after registering two or three hundred," pilgrims alleged. They said that officials have reportedly engaged some middlemen who extort money from pilgrims. "Such practice looting pilgrims or accommodating blue-eyed should be stopped," they demanded. "Twice I reached the counter once I provided them my medical certificate they shut the door," Subash alleged. He said that many Pilgrims spent night in open sky despite rainfall just to get registered in the morning but all in vain. "In the evening pilgrims start queuing up but at around 5am police disperse them with lathis," Subash alleged. Harmis Kumar another Yatri said that non-availability of drinking water and adequate accommodation facility has exposed Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB). "Here is no drinking water facility imagine, when pilgrims approach railway station for driking water, railway police disallows them and even beats them," Kumar said. Deputy Commissioner Budgam and Deputy Commissioner Srinagar disowned the Nowgam Amarnath Yatra base camp. "Nowgam base doesn't fall in my jurisdiction," both of them responded to Early Times, However Deputy Commissioner Srinagar assured to address drinking water problem at the base camp. Depty CEO, Verinder Salthia assured will convey grievances of pilgrims to his higher authorities. "Have noted will according convey to higher authorities," he responded when informed about the non-availability of drinking water at Nowgam base camp, however, refused to comment over the issue of mismanagement of registration process. |
