Fissures surface in 'united' Hurriyat as Geelani hijacks protest calendar | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Sept 29: After a few months of political- honeymooning, fissures have yet again surfaced in "united" Hurriyat as senior separatist leader and pro-Pakistan hawk, Syed Ali Geelani has hijacked the protest calendar. Sources said for the past over a month Geelani, who heads Hurriyat G, has been unilaterally issuing the protest programs in restive Kashmir, without taking the Hurriyat M led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front led by Muhammad Yasin Malik Malik into confidence. Insiders said the Hurriyat M and JKLF leaders believe that Geelani once again wants to have supremacy over separatist leadership, much the way he had announced at a public rally during 2010 unrest, when he asked people if they accept him as the sole leader. Though Geelani had subsequently called a press conference to clarify his stand, his words had distanced him from other leaders. This time the Hurriyat M and JKLF are likely to call a joint meeting to decide future course of action. Sources said Geelani only speaks to his close aides to decide on the calendar whereas leadership from the parallel pro-freedom camps is not taken onboard in any decision-making, something which has left the other stakeholders annoyed. Over two months ago when the "united" Hurriyat started issuing protest calendar in the wake of killing of militant commander Burhan Muzaffar Wani and his two associates on July 8, sources said Geelani, Mirwaiz and Malik would contact each other before releasing any new calendar and would jointly decide on each and every move against the government. Sources said soon after Burhan's killing when Malik was arrested, his deputy Noor Muhammad Kalwal of JKLF would be consulted for issuance of protest program, which has mainly been about hartals and roadside protests. However since August 26 when Mirwaiz was also arrested from his Nigeen residence and lodged at Cheshma Shahi sub-jail, no separatist leaders beyond those from Hurriyat G are consulted for issuance of calendar. Sources said both Malik and Mirwaiz, presently behind the bars have been informed by their close aides that Geelani has hijacked the calendar and that even the state government endorses his supremacy now. While the ruling Peoples Democratic Party has yet again softened its stand towards Geelani asking him to mellow down protest calls, a PDP minister has been constantly showering praises on the hardliner. In the latest, at a public function, the government spokesperson and Education Minister Naeem Akhter openly hailed Geelani. While addressing an official function at Women's College MA Road here on September 26, Akhter termed Geelani as "absolute head of resistance movement". The government spokesman asked the audience, comprising senior officials and academicians to treat Geelani's Wullar Kinaray as "must read". In May this year, after around half a decade, JKLF Chairman had forged united in the divided Hurriyat factions whereas all the separatist leaders had pledged to work in coordination. |
