BJP can't cheat Jammu, Ladakh this way | Yashwant and Co | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Oct 26: It was some ten days ago that a news report in a leading national daily suggested that a team led by senior BJP leader and former Finance and External Affairs Minister Yashwant Sinha could visit Srinagar to find what could satisfy Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Yasin Malik and other separatists and Kashmiri leaders belonging to Kashmiri parties like the NC, the Congress, the CPI-M and so on. That time, no one considered this report serious. However, it was on Tuesday that news channels flashed the report that Sinha, along with the supporters of Kashmiri separatists and Pakistan Wajahat Habibullah, Kapil Kak, Sushobha Bharve and Bharat Bhushan had landed in Srinagar and their first meeting would be with Geelani, which did take place. Thereafter, Sinha and what he called "goodwill group" met with Mirwaiz, Yasin Malik, Shabir Shah, Abdul Gani Bhat and who not and discussed with them what could end the prevailing unrest in the Valley. After meeting with Geelani, Sinha briefed media but refused to divulge what transpired during the meeting. "I will not reveal what we discussed, but I would say there is need for talks between New Delhi and Separatists," he said. His refusal was an indication that there was a discussion on the political future of the state. Had that not been the case, he would not have kept the nation in the dark. A report quoting a member of the controversial delegation said that Sinha and group will submit a report to the Government of India on the prevailing situation in Kashmir, as also on what transpired during the meeting. That one member of the group said that it would submit a report to the government was an indication that the Kashmir mission of Sinha has the official backing. Even otherwise, no one would buy their argument that they were on a private visit. Similarly, no one would go by the statements of the Union Home Ministry and the BJP central leadership that they had nothing to do with the visit of Sinha and his gang of four. The fact of the matter is that Sinha and group have the mandate to engage with the separatists. It is a different story that Geelani and others who met with Sinha and his group told them on their face that they would be willing to talk to Delhi provided it recognized Jammu & Kashmir dispute territory; provided it considered Pakistan a party to the issue, and provided they were allowed to exercise the right to self-determination. Insiders suggest that that Geelani and other Kashmiri separatists told Sinha that "Jammu & Kashmir belong to Muslims and Pakistan" and that "they would not dilute their stand". All the reports from Delhi and Srinagar suggest that none took cognizance of the aspirations of Jammu, Ladakh, internally displaced Kashmiri Hindus and other refugees, including from Pakistan who had been struggling to obtain citizenship rights since 1947. It is disgusting. The BJP cannot cheat and bluff the people of Jammu and Ladakh. Not the BJP has the mandate to unsettle the settled in Jammu & Kashmir. It must be underlined that Jammu & Kashmir is not a no man's land where any Tom, Dick and Harry could play nefarious games, hobnob with the anti-national elements and promise a dispensation outside India. |
