Kaun banega SMC Commissioner? | PDP leaders start lobbying for 'own' man | | Early Times Report srinagar, Oct 26: Even as the incumbent Commissioner, Srinagar Municipal Corporation, Bashir Ahmed Khan is scheduled to retire later this month, at least two lawmakers from the ruling Peoples Democratic Party led coalition have started hectic lobbying to bring their "favorite" official as the new head of the civic body, which recently bagged special funds worth around Rs 100 crores for expenditure in the summer capital. Sources said for the past few days, a PDP minister, who has remained a government servant in the past, and his party colleague, a lawmaker from Srinagar, have been lobbying hard to get their "favorite" official as the new SMC Commissioner, when huge central funding, is available for execution of new projects in the summer capital. Sources said they have kept at least three officials in good humor assuring each of them separately that "only you will be given the charge of the civic body." Sources in Housing and Urban Development Department said the PDP minister accompanied one of this "favorite officials" to call on Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti. The official, who has remained SMC Commissioner in the past as well, was "unceremoniously" removed from the chair, owing to his alleged differences with the government, when he failed to "toe line with diktats of some ministers." Last year, the then Mufti Muhammad Sayeed led government brought him as the SMC Commissioner. Incidentally the same two PDP leaders had been supporting his transfer to the civic body. The two PDP leaders, who claim to be "religiously honest" subsequently came under scanner for exploiting SMC as a tool to "mint millions as kickbacks for party funds." One of them, who pretended to be "most honest" during his service career, came under scanner for taking money through, a middle-rung government official, who is also his "close aide". Last year, the PDP leader duo was calling the shots as ministers. To meet interests of some businessmen and in the garb of vote bank politics, the PDP minister duo allegedly facilitated hundreds of illegal commercial malls and other constructions to come up without any building permission. "Around 100 such mega commercial constructions came up in south City alone, where even main roads were encroached upon," said an official in the Roads and Building Department while sharing some official documents. "These two ministers were behind major illegal constructions which ruined the Master Plan, while the enforcement squad of SMC equally grabbed huge money in such deals," recapped an insider. However, the PDP leader duo last year went suddenly against the SMC Commissioner when he allegedly declined to illegally allot some works to their henchmen. This officer was subsequently removed from the chair. But this time, officials in the Civil Secretariat said that "love is in the air", again. |
