JAMMU, Nov 1: As the miscreants are leaving no stone unturned to burn the educational institutions across Kashmir, mainstream politicians and legislators barring a few are not mustering courage to condemn such actions, and call spade a spade.
"Since the day unrest broke out in Kashmir, the politicians from mainstream parties are maintaining a low profile and have taken a break. They have not visited their constituencies, nor have they made any attempt to reach out to the people who voted for them," said an analyst.
He said that despite separatists fomenting trouble in Kashmir and making desperate attempts to keep the pot boiling, mainstream politicians have not made any attempt to douse the flames. "It's high time for the politicians to come out of their shells and make people aware about the importance of the educational institutions in Kashmir," the analyst added.
"These politicians should muster courage and tell the people in their constituencies that they have to safeguard these schools to save the future of their children. This is the time when they can expose the separatists and prove it beyond doubt that they are the biggest enemies of people of Kashmir as they have taken Kashmir as hostage for the past four months to appease the their bosses sitting across the Line of Control (LoC)," said a Kashmir watcher.
He said, "Mainstream politicians disappearing from the scene led to the situation taking an ugly turn. Had they remained stationed in their constituencies and helped the people situation in Kashmir would not have taken such an ugly turn."
A teacher, who wished not to be named said, "It's strange that people are debating that who is burning the schools in Kashmir. All of us know it very well that the people who have been calling strikes are involved in the burning of educational institutions. They are doing so to keep the pot boiling and prolong the ongoing unrest in the Valley. They are playing a dirty game. We need to muster courage and raise a banner of revolt to convey that we disapprove such acts."
He said separatists are involved in promoting a culture of impunity, strikes and rioting and are were responsible for burning the schools in Kashmir. "The onus to save the schools rests with the government. It should ensure that miscreants are kept at bay and school buildings are saved," the teacher added.
Meanwhile, the Kashmir based spokesman of BJP Khalid Jehangir while talking to Early Times said, ""It looks like that people who set ablaze the schools and houses of Kashmiri Pandits in nineties have once again regrouped and are indulging in arson. The government should reopen the cases which were filed against the miscreants in 1990. It would help the police and other agencies to trace the history sheeters and expose the people who are setting education institutions on fire in Kashmir."
Jehangir said, "In 1990 majority community acted as mute spectator when the minorities were hounded out. There was no backlash by the civil society. Now in 2016 same formula is being applied. It's high time for Kashmiri society to react as it cannot be driven by a few thugs, who are hell bent upon turning Kashmir into Syria."
It's in place to mention here that at least 27 schools have been torched during the past two months, nine in September and 18 in October.
