'Kashmiri youth should not play in national, international events' | After gutting schools, Geelani's evil eye targets Sports | | Abodh Sharma ET Report JAMMU, Nov 1: After jeopardizing the career prospects of the Kashmiri children and youth, by burning over two dozen schools and not allowing educational institutions across the state to open for the last four months, the pro Pakistan separatist hawk Ali Shah Geelani has now turned his evil eye to sports. In a statement, issued the previous day, Geelani said that the participation of kashmiri sportspersons in the national and international events representing India weakens the 'freedom struggle' and hence they should refrain from participating in these events. Geelani's latest dictate is being seen as his latest bid to stifle the youth of Kashmir further and push them into disruptive and anti national activities which would ensure that their future was ruined forever. It is also seen as Geelani's design to counter the initiative of the union government to attract youth of the state towards sports for positive channelization of their energies into nation building. While inclusion of cricketer like Parvez Rasool into the national team has opened a window for the budding sportspersons from the valley, records suggest that thousands of sportspersons from Kashmir have been benefitted by participating in the national level events representing J&K, and earned berths in the professional colleges of the state on the basis of certificates of participation in these events. "Many Kashmiri students got into professional colleges on sports quota on the basis of their participation in the national championships and became doctors and engineers" said Amit Khurana, an office bearer of a sport association, adding, "This seems to be another attempt by Geelani to decimate budding careers of Kashmir youth and children". Many Kashmiri sportspersons have also been inducted into government service on the basis of their outstanding achievement in the field of sports, under SRO 249. Geelnai's dictate has infuriated the parents of young sportspersons of the valley as well, who want him to keep his evil hands off sports. "For years he has been using the youth of Kashmir as ammunition for his nefarious designs and this statement is an attempt to target the sportspersons who have kept aloof from his killer conspiracies" said a parent, who recently shifted to Jammu so that his children could study. It is pertinent to mention here that many sports persons from Kashmir have won medals at the national level events across the country and several of them have donned national colours as well. |
