Separatists desperate to hold joint session ahead of "Track-II team" visit | | | Early Times Report srinagar, Nov 26: Ahead of the expected second visit of the "Track II" team led by veteran Bharatiya Janta Party leader Yashwant Sinha to Kashmir, the separatists who have been spearheading the ongoing protests are desperate to call a joint meeting. Though police here Saturday prevented the Hurriyat M Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front Chairman Muhammad Yasin Malik from meeting Syed Ali Geelani at latter's Hyder Pora residence, the separatist leadership has started persuading the government through some leaders of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) to let them hold a joint session assuring that it would be in the "interest" of the state. Sources said the separatist leaders have approached at-least two PDP leaders to let them be allowed to hold a joint meeting of the united Hurriyat at Geelani's residence. Sources said the Hurriyat leaders are aware of the fact that the strike calls are failing to make impact and that they want to hold a meeting to call off the protest calendar. "Separatists want to get into the good books of the Track II team by pretending before them that we called off the strike, because if otherwise life fully gets back to normal during protest calendar given by these leaders, they will lose their relevance before New Delhi," said a source in the Hurriyat, on the condition of anonymity. Sources said some Hurriyat leaders had already assured the Track II team led by Sinha during his previous visit of helping in restoration of normalcy. "These separatists had no other options as the government had tightened noose around the family members of leaders like Geelani. His son was questioned by NIA team and any further probe would have exposed their hidden treasures. So to avoid this all separatists had gone for change in their strategy," said a source. He said the separatists would have called off the strike on November 8 when they called a joint meeting. "However, due pressure from the Pakistani handlers they couldn't do so that time," the source said. "But now finding their boat sinking they want to get into the good books of the government," the sources said. On October 28, a five-member delegation led by Yashwant Sinha met separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani at his residence in a bid to break logjam after more than four months of deadly unrest in the Valley. The team, which includes former bureaucrat Wajahat Habibullah, who has served in Jammu and Kashmir, ex-Air Vice Marshal Kapil Kak, journalist Bharat Bhushan and activist Sushobha Barve landed in Srinagar and straight away drove to Geelani's residence in Hyderpora. Sinha and his team members are also met other separatist leaders, including moderate Hurriyat head Mirwaiz Umar Farooq. |
