No easy solution to end Kashmir conflict: Gen Hooda | Pitching for long-term approach | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Dec 2: On his last day in office as Northern Army Commander Lt General, 16 Corps, DS Hooda claimed that "he didn't see an easy solution to end the Kashmir conflict" and called it "a long war" that would require "a long-term approach". Lt Gen Hooda made these significant remarks just a day after the Pakistani Fidayeens pierced the highly fortified Nagrota Army Camp and martyred seven of our soldiers, including two young Majors. He claimed that the "situation along the Line of Control was not cooling down anytime soon and the hinterland would also remain hot". He also spoke on the Nagrota attack. He said: "I wished we could have prevented the Nagrota strike but some setbacks have to be accepted and we learn our lessons. We have to move on, rather than let one incident set the discourse for overall national security". He rubbished the reports that "actionable intelligence was available on the Nagrota attack". As many as 60 soldiers were martyred in Jammu & Kashmir in 2016. Lt Gen Hooda said: "The army was ruthless about finding ways to minimize casualties. We understand this more than anyone else because our lives depend on it". He made another significant statement on the situation turning bad after the September 29 surgical strikes across the LoC. "If we look at everything from a two-month perspective, we will end up adopting a short-term view. That will be counter-productive in terms of dealing with Pakistan". What the superannuated General said must be taken seriously. For, he was man on the spot and for many years. He knew the ground situation. His statement that "We have to move on, rather than let one incident set the discourse for overall national security" was all the more significant. |
