Malik trains guns on Govt from Lal Chowk, Mirwaiz fires salvos from Jamia Masjid | Ahead of Sinha's visit, separatists given freehand in restive Kashmir | | Early Times Report srinagar, Dec 2: Ahead of the visit of the 5-member team led by veteran Bharatiya Janta Party leader Yashwant Sinha to Kashmir for another round of the "Track-II talks", the government has given a freehand to the separatists, who are spearheading the ongoing protests in the Valley. On Friday, which has otherwise remained a sensitive day in the wake of past experiences of violence, the police today allowed free movement to the separatist leaders including Hurriyat (M) Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front Chairman Mohammed Yasin Malik. While Malik led an anti-India really near the commercial hub of Lal Chowk, Mirwaiz fired salvos on New Dehli from the Jamia Masjid pulpit. A police official pleading anonymity said they have instructions from the higher-ups not to interfere with the movement of separatists. "When we were allowed to keep them caged, we didn't let them incite violence, but now we are asked to allow them move freely how can we stop them because these are political decisions," an official told Early Times on the condition of anonymity. He however said Malik was taken into custody when his procession was about to reach Lal Chowk. For the last over a fortnight, the separatists have intensified their activities across the Valley. Last week Yasin Malik visited Tral, the hometown of slain militant commander Burhan Muzaffar Wani and earlier this week he visited Shopian to address anti-India rallies. The Dukhtaran e Millat activists on the other hand held a rally in Pulwama on December 1. The separatists enjoy an upper hand on the situation, when the government is struggling to restore law and order in the Valley, that has been on the edge for around five months. Sources in the government said the Hurriyat leaders are being allowed to move around on the "recommendations" of the team led by BJP leader and former Union minister Yashwant Sinha, who last month visited Kashmir and held meetings with separatists leaders including Syed Ali Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq. While the government is optimistic that given the freedom to move around the separatists will call off the calendar soon, till now there has been no such improvement. Kashmir has been on the edge since July 8 when Burhan and his two colleagues were killed. Till now the separatists have declined to call off the strike as they continue to issue weekly protest calendars, which are losing relevance with each passing day. |
