JNV Surankote lacks basic amenities, Students face hardships | | | M S Nazki Early Times Report
Poonch, Dec. 1: Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Surankote is running without even the basic amenities and students are facing a tough time. While Governments both in Center and State have shown serious concern for development of educational institutions, JNV Surankote struggles for fundamental amenities. JNV Surankote has been running for several years in this area for students from 6th to 12th class. Despite being the only JNV in the border district Poonch the school has been neglected by the authorities and many portions of the building are incomplete. The school has the strength of 250-300 students. Being a residential campus it requires to accommodate all the students in the campus itself. In the campus hostel the intake capacity of one dormitory is 15 however 35 -40 students are bundled together due to shortage of rooms, besides students are served poor quality food. The library and the laboratory are only for the name sake and in the absence of a defined playground, no competitions cane be organized. In the absence of compound wall there is always a fear of some mishappening as the school is surrounded by dense forest and there is high probability of attack of wild animals. Students are also facing hardships due to scarcity of water. There is only one hand pump for the entire campus. It is quite shocking that there is no water supply or facility of water tanks from PHE which causes crisis of drinking water. In case of emergency there is no facility of transportation. The only van school has, is off road for several years. The students and staff are dependent on private vehicles to commute in case of medical emergency. The students have to spend out of their own pockets for medicines no assistance is given from the school. The building was hit badly during floods in 2014 and is in bad shape but students are bound to stay despite of threat to their lives. The list of problems does not end here as majority of the teaching staff is on contractual basis. Pertinent to mention here that HRD ministry of Union Govt. spends billions to maintain high standards of JNVs but this border school remains deprived of even basic amenities. M H Malik DC Poonch told Early Times that matter is in his notice and he had paid a visit recently to the school and all the issues were taken up with the principal of the school. He further informed that an ambulance and a school van will soon be provided to the school. "Similarly other issues will also be taken care of on priority basis", he said. |
