Mirwaiz says 'No' to Militancy, terms non-violence only way forward | What changed all of a sudden? | | Early Times Report srinagar, Dec 2: The chairman of Hurriyat's moderate faction Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has hinted at distancing himself from hardliner Syed Ali Geelani with his latest statement about militants and militancy stirring hornet's nest within the political spectrum of the state. As Kashmir witnessed four months of turmoil due to the killing of Hizb militant Burhan Wani, giving chance to the Kashmiri separatists to take Valley at a grinding halt, Mirwaiz in his fresh statement has said that militancy wouldn't resolve the crises on ground. In one of his interviews here, Mirwaiz while giving enough hints of distancing himself from the aged Hurriyat hawk Syed Ali Geelani has said that the non- violent methods have the capacity to resolve the pending issues and that the militancy at the present time wouldn't garner any support from any quarter. When asked whether he supports militancy in Kashmir, he replied that only peaceful and non- violent methods resolve the pending issues and it is being endorsed worldwide. On social networking sites here, he is being termed as Kashmiri 'Gandhi' by the people and is being questioned about the reasons of backing the strike calls after the death of a militant. "If you believe that only peaceful struggle is a way out, why did you backed the agitation that caused logjam for over four months in peak business season," posted one netizen on a social networking site. While Mirwaiz's such a statement caused jittery within the separatist camp in Kashmir at large, the chairman of the rival faction Syed Ali Geelani has preferred silence over the issue and hasn't muttered a single word since the day Mirwaiz issued such a statement. Amid the current unrest, Mirwaiz's rejection to militancy has given rise to the new debate in Kashmir and that it why he was silent for so long and whether he was dragged into the hartal politics by anyone within the separatist camp. Interestingly, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq who is also the chief religious cleric in Kashmir had pitched for the end of the hartal culture in Kashmir prior to the unrest that broke out on July 9. Mirwaiz in the series of statements had asked separatists to rethink about the strategy they have been adopting in Kashmir since decades. While calling for the end of the hartal culture in Kashmir, Mirwaiz has said that such modes of protests only bring chaos and cause loses to the people at large. This 43-year-old separatist had also urged Geelani not to keep Hartal as the only way of protest. He, prior to Burhan Wani's killing had called for the all party meet to discuss whether anything has been achieved by the Hartals so far. Meanwhile, when state is witnessing a spurt in the militancy related incidents with reports pouring about locals joining the militant ranks particularly in South Kashmir, Mirwaiz's 'No' to gun has a potential to create ripples within the separatists . |
