SRINAGAR, Dec 2: Police today arrested separatist leader and Jammu & Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) Chairman, Mohammad Yasin Malik in the city centre while he tried to move towards Lal Chowk area in order to carry out a protest demonstration there. Reports said that JKLF chairman along with some of his supporters after offering the Friday prayers appeared in the Madina Chowk and started a march towards Lal Chowk. The protest march was held in order to show solidarity with hundreds of people who are lodged in different jails both within the state and outside the state. As soon as Malik along with his supporters reached Budshah Chowk police swung into action. The police personnel took into custody the JKLF chairman and some of his supporters. Malik tried his best to evade the arrest, but did not succeed and was whisked away to the nearby Kothi Bagh police station. Some of his associates entered into argument with the police personnel and the situation turned tense in the area. Malik along with other separatist leaders like Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq had asked people to show solidarity with the detainees. They had also asked the religious preachers to mention about the alleged torture being meted out to the detainees lodged in different jails and interrogation centres. In the meantime, authorities today allowed Mirwaiz Umar to deliver sermon at the Jamia Masjid located in the Nowhatta area of downtown Srinagar. It was after 20 Fridays that Mirwaiz Umar was allowed to deliver sermon and offer the congregational Friday prayers at the Jamia Masjid here. As soon as the Friday prayers culminated Mirwaiz was taken in a procession towards the Gojwara chowk where later on clashes broke out between groups of agitating youth and police as well as Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel. The ding dong battle between the two sides carried on for some time and the situation turned normal in the evening. Police and CRPF personnel lobbed smoke shells on the agitators with the protests spreading to adjacent areas like Nowhatta, Khawaja Bazar, Naid Kadal, Rajouri Kadal and Nallahmar Road. In the summer capital of the state clashes between agitating youth and security forces also broke out in the Batmaloo area. The protesting youth assembled near Reka Chowk in Batmaloo and pelted stones on the security forces that retaliated with pellets. In the Baramulla district intense clashes erupted in the Sopore town. Immediately after the Friday prayers people in large numbers assembled in the Jamia Masjid of Sopore and started shouting slogans. The protesters started moving towards the main chowk where police and CRPF personnel dispersed them by lobbing smoke shells. In the Tahab area of Pulwama district people staged a protest against the arrest spree. The protesters alleged that during the intervening night of December 1 and 2, police conducted nocturnal raids and arrested more than 25 people. Protests were also held in Newa and Aarihal areas of the district. Authorities imposed restrictions in the Dooru town of Anantnag district where a civilian was killed in mysterious circumstances on Thursday in the evening. Reports said that people were not allowed to venture out from their houses and the congregational Friday prayers were not allowed. |
