Forestland, trees vandalized for road construction in Sunderbani | | | AB Sharma
Early Times Report
Rajouri, Apr 25: In brazen violation of norms, an "influential contractor" is vandalizing forestland and prized trees there for construction of road in Sunderbani, Nowshehra area here while the concerned Forest Department is sleeping over the issue. Without any mandatory permission from the state Cabinet for the construction of road through forestland, the concerned contractor is uprooting trees planted in forestland to pave way for construction of road. Sources said the influential contractor enjoys patronage of politicians from a ruling party "to do whatever he wants to for construction of illegal road." "This road is illegal as forestland cannot be used for construction of road unless Cabinet grants permission for it," said a senior official on the condition of anonymity. The environmentalist said though the matter was brought to the notice of the concerned including district administration, no action was being taken. A pressure group had decided to take the matter to the "highest quarters to expose how the government has been silent over vandalisation of forestland." When contacted the Divisional Forest Officer declined to comment on the issue. "Talk to my seniors," the official said and dropped the phone. |
