Sports Council 'mysteriously' cancels tenders, contractors upset | | | Saahil Suhail
Early Times Report Anantnag, Apr 25: To appease a group of politically backed contractors, the Jammu And Kashmir State Sports Council has 'mysteriously' cancelled tenders it had floated to carry out some works on some play fields in South Kashmir's Anantnag district. According to official reports, Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti during her much hyped public 'outreach' program last year had directed State Sports Council authorities to carry out these works in the district in order to provide to better facilities to the youngsters. Up-gradation of sports stadium Akura Mattan is among the directions passed by the chief minister during the outreach program (Public Darbar) held on 11th of November last year in Anantnag district, they said. Officials at Anantnag said that the funds required for upgrading these sports fields have been released to the State Sports Council. However, the State Sports Council which a month ago floated tenders for executing the works has now mysteriously cancelled the same tenders without intimating the reason to the contractors who had submitted the tenders last month. "State Sports Council used delaying tacts to appease a group of contractors who had started executing the work earlier but we protested and it is result of our protest that State Sports Council floated tenders," G Qadir Ahmad, a local contractor told Early Times. He said that under political pressure State Sports Council issued corrigendum multiple times but now finally cancelled it. Contractors alleged that the State Sports Council wants to avoid tendering process to benefit some blue-eyed contractors who are lobbying hard to get the same work executed through Rural Development Department through convergence mode. "We understand that State Sports Council will now release funds to Rural Development Department and get the work executed through it as it is only way for the Sports Council to avoid tendering and benefit politically backed contractors," they said. Executive Engineer Sports Council, Muzaffer Ahmad on being contacted admitted to have cancelled the tenders. "We cancelled the tenders because we hadn't got the administrative approval of Secretary Sports Council," he said, adding tenders will be floated again once the administrative approval is obtained as without the same floating tenders is incorrect and against norms. |
