Patients left to starve as H&ME fail to clear contractor's pending liabilities | | | Early Times Report Jammu, May 22: With department of Health and Medical Education failing to clear pending liabilities of the contractor, over a thousand in patients of the Government medical college hospital Jammu are being deprived of the prescribed diet and instead forced to live on a few slices of bread. Pertinently, GMC&H Jammu has to pay pending liabilities of more than one crore for last many years owing to which the suppliers have cut the diet and are only serving few slices of bread with vegetable. Even, in 2015 the diet of the above-said hospitals was stopped by the suppliers for the same reasons but the department has failed to come out with the permanent solution. Sources told Early Times that the regular diet to patients of the GMC&H and its associated hospital had been stopped from April 1st, this year and later on the requests, the suppliers started to serve slices of bread but refused to supply milk and others items as the pending amount was not cleared so far. "The supplier had sent reminders to GMC Jammu and its associated hospital to clear the outstanding amount so that the diet would be resumed. Even, the suppliers also warned that if the pending amount is not released, the supply of afternoon and evening meal will also be stopped but the efforts were in vain as the heads of these institutions are least bothered to resolve the issue , "sources claimed. Official sources said that in past the funds were used to be released under plan budget and such problems did not arise, but now the funds are released under non-plan budget, due to which the hospital authorities are unable to clear all dues of contractor in time. |
