PMGSY works move at snail's pace in Anantnag

Early Times Report

Anantnag, May 22: Despite sufficient funding by Union government, the roads under PMGSY scheme are being constructed at a snail's pace in south Kashmir's Anantnag district.
The slow pace of construction work isn't only negating the official claims but is also putting the precious lives of innocent citizens at risk.
According to reports, the contractors who have been allotted contracts of constructing these roads have evidently abandoned the works after initiating them last year in various areas of the district. The suspension of works on Bijbehara-Sirhama road, Bijbehara-Veeri-Thajiwara road and others has left these roads in shambles.
Locals alleged that the children and elderly suffer from chest related problems due to the dust emanating from these roads. They requested PMGSY authorities to speed-up the construction works and macadamize these roads stretches for making them motor-able.
The slow pace of work on Bijbehara-Sirhama road, being upgraded by PMGSY has made the lives of people miserable.
Many see commuting as a "great inconvenience" of their everyday life, in some cases even leading to accidents. The condition of the roads in Bejbehara-Sirhama has worsened. Roads leading to Mehind area of Bijbehara are in dilapidated condition.
Huge potholes on the stretch give tough time to the commuters, while bumpy ride on this road leads to bad driving experience.
Local residents of the area have appealed the concerned authorities to get the main and link Roads in this Bijbehara-Sirhama of Anantnag district macadamized as the same were in dilapidated condition for the past several years. The residents said that the concerned agencies, after widening and macadamizing one kilometer, left other 11kilometers in dilapidated condition.
The Bijbehara-Veeri-Thajiwara road also continues to be in shambles with authorities watching as mute spectators, they said, adding their repeated pleas before the authorities for macadamization of roads have not yielded any results.
A PMGSY official however said that these roads are being upgraded and would be macadamized once the base work gets completed and local residents remove the structures that come along the alignment of the road. "Public Negotiation Committee (PNC) has already cleared our compensation cases. We hope locals will support us by demolishing their structures once they receive compensation amount," he said.
