Pro-Kashmir forces gang up in Delhi, pitch for autonomy
10/10/2016 11:09:54 PM
Early Times Report

JAMMU, Oct 10: On Sunday, a number commentators and so-called social activist gathered at Delhi and spoke on the Kashmir issue and suggested various solutions to end the unrest in the Valley. Some of them included journalists Prem Shankar Jha and Kuldip Nayar, Sanjay Kak, film-maker, and MM Ansari, former interlocutor.
Speaking on the occasion, Jha suggested that Kashmir was slipping away and there is the urgent need to end the unrest by meeting the demands of those leading the anti-India movement in Kashmir. He pitched for autonomy to Kashmir.
"Jammu & Kashmir was slipping out of hand. Only an out-of-box solution could salvage the situation. It is fallacious to see Kashmir as a communal problem and wrong to presume that majority of the people were pro-Pakistan. I met Hizbul Mujahideen boys and even they didn't talk of Kashmir as a Hindu-Muslim issue but pointed out the promises India didn't fulfill. Kashmir problem is about true democracy not religion," he said. He also added that the government could "consider dividing Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh".
Kuldip Nayar also echoed almost similar views and, at the same time, said that the separatists have lost all their credibility and there was hardly anyone in Kashmir who was willing to following their diktats. "The current problem is exceptional as the separatist leaders have lost credibility and the completely alienated youth have come to the forefront of protest," he was quoted as saying. He added the Kashmir youth did not want anything short of freedom.
Taking on the separatists, Nayar said: "I told them (separatists) nobody will accept this in India and the Parliament will never even consider it and that the best option is autonomy and strengthening Article 370 as the dilution of Article 370 has created all the problems as it was on these terms that Jammu & Kashmir came to India in 1947 and that it should be honoured". He also used the opportunity to urge "the intellectuals and media to mount pressure on Government of India to initiate dialogue and find immediate solution to Kashmir issue".
Kak, Ansari and others who spoke on the occasion only talked about Kashmir and Kashmir issue. None thought it prudent to refer to the aspirations and compulsions of the people of Jammu and Ladakh. They, like Jha and Nayar, focused their whole attention on Kashmir and took the people of Jammu and Ladakh for a ride.
There is something fundamentally wrong with those in Delhi or elsewhere who masquerade as trouble-shooters and conflict-managers. They know that Kashmir is just one of the three regions which constitute the Stare of Jammu & Kashmir and still they choose to ignore this fact and adopt Kashmir-centric approach known it well such an approach will not work. Their approach, if accepted, would create more problems than resolving the existing ones. They should realize it. They should discuss Jammu & Kashmir in a holistic manner and that alone could help New delhi break the impasse in the sensitive border state.
