MHA issues terror alert ahead of Dussehra, Muharram | | | Ishtiyaq Ahmad Early Times Report Srinagar, Oct 10: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Monday issued a fresh advisory to security agencies in J&K, asking them to remain vigilant during upcoming Dussehra and Muharram. "Also, politicians including ministers and legislators, have been asked to remain extra-cautious and use bullet proof vehicles while moving around, reliable sources told Early Times. They said the advisory has been issued following a sudden spurt in militant activities across the Valley. "Intel inputs suggest that militants might carry out attacks during the Dussehra and Muharram processions," sources said. The security agencies have been asked to deploy additional forces in key areas such as marketplaces, places of worship, and vital installations. The advisory also says that Jammu and Srinagar cities should be extra-vigilant. According to sources, the recent militancy-related incidents have prompted the security agencies to issue the fresh advisory to VIPs. "The ministers and legislators have been asked not to visit any area in non-bullet proof vehicles," sources said. They said the politicians have been asked to venture out into any area only after getting clearance from the police. "The police station concerned and the SSP know the security scenario of their respective area and they only can decide whether the area is safe or unsafe for the visit of a politician," sources said, adding that additional security in the districts has also to be managed by the district SSPs. A senior police officer in Srinagar said the security of ministers and legislators was beefed up soon after the surge in militant activities. However, a senior police official said these are standing directions. "Use of bullet proof vehicles by the ministers, legislators and prior information to police are standing directions," he said. Sources said that the police have also been asked to check incidents of provocative slogan shouting near religious places and eve-teasing, as these could lead to communal tension. Meanwhile sources said that a high-level security meeting was chaired by Union Home minster Rajnath Singh at New Delhi. "During the meeting, the Home minister sought reports from the participants about the status of law and order, over all security arrangements in Jammu and Kashmir," sources said. Senior officials representing different security agencies briefed the meeting about the required steps to be taken to maintain law and order in the state. According to sources while complimenting the role of the J&K Police and other security agencies, the Home Minister said that it is always a challenging and daunting task for the security agencies in J&K but due to sincere and effective efforts of all security agencies, they are ensuring peace in the state. |
