JK eats humble pie in Power Ministers' Conference
State slammed for non-performance in solar energy project

Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 10: The J&K government was reprimanded in the State Power, New & Renewable Energy Ministers conference, as Union Power Minister took serious note of the failure of the state government to make any headway in the solar energy project.
Sources told Early Times that Union Minister for Power, New & Renewable Energy Piyush Goyal expressed his displeasure over the dismal performance of J&K government for not working out important modalities to start the solar energy project.
Goyal was speaking during the two-day conference held at Gujarat recently.
"The Union Minister reprimanded the state representatives for their failure to prepare pre-feasibility report on financial viability of the projects which is mandatory to start the projects," sources said.
Penitently, during the UPA government in the Centre, a new ministry was formed under the title of "New & Renewable Energy" and the former J&K Chief Minister and president of the National Conference Dr Farooq Abdullah was assigned charge of the ministry.
Abdullah had sanctioned two major solar energy projects for J&K but failed to get them implemented during his tenure.
"Farooq Abdullah had made tall claims about timely competition of 7500 MWs of solar power for Leh and Kargil districts. That time his son Omar Abdullah was the Chief Minister in the state yet nothing could be done to start the project due to apathy of the agencies concerned," sources said.
The state had formulated Solar Power Policy few years back to work on harness of green and clean energy and Memorandum of Understanding was also signed between the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy and J&K Science Technology Department. But the state showed no interest to make it a reality, sources said. Moreover, many small plants of solar energy, which were installed many years ago across the state, are lying defunct, they added.
